Turning an "assault rifle" ....... PINK!

I didn't want to hijack other threads on finishes, so here goes.

I'm nearing the final stages of building a steel based "assault rifle" for my girlfriend. The main idea is that in the end, it will be a "girly colour" or something different than the usual tan, black, or camo. I've got the resources to build any technique specific stuff for the work, or have access to it, so mainly looking for something that's going to wear the best and look the best.

We have settled on red/pink/metallic pink.

First idea is to use a metallic red or metallic pink paint to get the sparkly finish (she loves sparkles, so this is a must) and then put a good layer of clear coat or possibly a pearlescent coat. Candy apple red, metallic red, or any crazy bright colours also work. Once again, extra points for sparkles.

Second idea is to figure out a parkerizing solution that will turn at least a deep red. If it isn't possible to get it light enough, it could be used as a base coat for a lighter paint, or, possibly as the main colour itself. In this case if a light enough coloured park solution could be found, then sparkles could be omitted.

Anyone out there have any first hand or theoretical knowledge on how to parkerize and get a red/pink finish? (I'd like to have the gun turn out pink, so figured parkerizing would be the most durable finish)

It was suggested replacing zinc oxide with red iron oxide, which sounds about right, but I'm wondering

A) if red iron oxide will in fact maintain it's red colour when involved in parkerizing.

B) if there is another metal that will parkerize white.

If the answer to both of those questions is yes, I may try mixing the two to wash out the deep rust red colour and hopefully achieve a rosier, pinker or at least more washed out rust red colour.

Something both bad@ss and cool

NOT this light, but this idea.

And probably Harley Quinn on the butt stock:

Let me guess the oddball handgrip is to meet Califorina werido laws?

I like the black and pink one the best, cool but clearly female at the same time.

I think that's why... something about how you're allowed 2/3 "assault rifle" characteristics?

I can guarantee you, plans on this one include a pistol grip, flash hider, and bayo lug!!!! oh the humanity!!!:p... all sparkly pink of course.

Hey Champ
Have you considered DuraCoat? They have heaps of different colours and even hold courses for tricks of the trade.

Hmmmm. How well does duracoat wear? I've got a shotgun that has been krylon'ed and it looks great, but it's wearing down pretty quickly. I figure as I have the time and have already invested so much effort, I should really go all out and get it 100% in all respects.

Also - what's it based in? I've got good access to most automotive paints and am wondering if it's similar to any commercial car brands, so I could get some metallic mixed in :D

Is it available in canada? I seem to remember there being problems with getting it here.

the gf just walked in so I'm going to see if she likes any of the duracoat colours.

Dura-coat and Arma-coat are both pretty good stuff and once you bake it, is pretty durable too. I would say a hell of a lot better than Krylon.
Just remember, it's ALL in the prep work. And parkerizing is a VERY good base for painting.

Any aluminum parts or acessories can be anodized pink or what ever colour you want. I think anodizing is reasonably priced.

Why would there be a problem getting it here? Its Phecking paint!!! what next cant export Tupperware because that's how Glocks are made :bangHead:
I would look into DuraCoat their website promises allot. I plan on doing a few pistols for the GF.

I am not sure but the "electric" colours may be similar to what you want, check out their Lady AmStripe that looks dam fine.
Please PM or post photos of the end result. Good Luck

Yeah the California rules are beyond understanding...as a matter of fact Enfield Jungle Carbines are prohibited as they meet the rules of an assault rifle.. Flash Supressor, Bayonet lug and detachable magazine = assault rifle

Go talk to your friendly autobody/paint store. Have a look at their candy colours and metallics. Georgous stuff.

You can also get the colour on using reg. spray can paint. The multipart metallic finishes work quite well and you can get these from Cdn tire.

The key is use the auto catalysed top coat. That is way more durable then anything we can get in a can and that clear will make the colour pop like on that rod.

Just confirm compatibility.

Odds are if they are repainting a car, rod, bike, whatever, there is always left over paint which they will dump. If you do all the prep and they just have to 'shoot' the colour, maybe case of beer type financing.

I have seen some spectacular finished done this way and very durable.

Hey - US export rules are far beyond my simple mind:p

I just figured they might not have an interest in the Canadian market and wouldn't offer it up here, thus making it rediculously expensive.

P.S. Found WHMIS sheets for Duracoat:

And material handling sheets

The whmis sheet lists Duracoat as a pre-catalysed laquer based paint, so unless one of those other chemicals I'm seeing in there is a magically heat resistant chemical, I think you've hit the nail on the head with suggesting an auto shop.

Another thought I had... as long as I'd be going through all the trouble, are there any tradeoffs for adding a UV inhibitor in these paints? I figure it will be out in the sun, and over the years that could hurt it. Unless it drastically weakened or dulled the paint it seems like a good idea to me.

These guys ship it to Canada ground and air: lauerweaponry.com/

I put a Prismatique clear on some snowboards I did a few years back which I got from a local autobody paint supply store.

This stuff has prismatic flecks in it that "SPARKLE" different colors depending on how the light catches it.

It is a lot cheaper than Kandies and is easy to apply if you have the air spray tools.

I don't know how it would hold up on a gun barrel, but the stock area would not be an issue
