I brought back from Germany some stuff from my uncle.
Here is a 1937 German Backpack:

I don't know anything about this backpack except, my grandfather owned it. I don't know what it is worth, either.

Here is a pre Nazi bayonnet:

How about a mint German mess tin:

I also have an original Russian Cold War gas mask:

That mess tin design seems to have survived long after WWII.

Is the backpack a military issue item? What was the purpose of the fur?

We can see the backpack is dated 1937. The reason for the fur? It might be regimental. My grandfather was a von from Prussia. He was a major landowner so he was an officer. He fought on the Eastern front. The bayonnet does not have a date. There are no Nazi markings. It has 1900 on one side and 42 plus something else on the other. The mess tin is in n.i.b. shape! I also have some strange boots that I will photograph tomorrow.

Henry;)

The fur is Horse Hair, sometimes referred to or listed as Pony Back Packs.

No idea but maybe for use as a pillow as it is warm?

Henry:

"42" means 1942. "fnj" is the manufacturer, it is a ww2 production code for "Alexander Coppel GmbH".

1900 is the serial number of the bayonet, not the year.

K98k bayonets had wooden grip up until 1941 or so. After that, makers began switching to bakelite grips, like on your bayonet.

Trust me. It's a 1942 bayonet, not "pre-nazi".

What is this?

The last bag is for the Soviet SM-1 or East German SchM41M gas mask. The small pouch on the side is for the round tin, which contains anti fogging plastic lenses (which have yellowed and curled with age).

The bag is most likely for the NVA. Soviet bags were khaki or beige in colour. The wood dowels were used in the inner bottom of the bag to strengthen the bottom, and prevent crushing of the filter.

The water bottle and bread bag may also be early NVA. Check the aluminum cap for a possible date of production or manufacture code.

The bag is Khaki and I have the Russian mask. My grandfather was a VON, and major landowner in Prussia. He did not care much for the Nazi! He probably made it a mission to keep it clean and rub off the Nazi sign. Where did you get yours and what is the history of the regiment?

Best regards,
Henry;)

It's just a standard issue German Army Belt as far as I know, given to us by a British fellow who acquired it during the war.

The M34 Tornister pack is worth about $120. The M31 mess tin will have a three letter code plus date (ie: SMM 41) by the top lid handle mount, and on the side by the wire handle mount if it is German 33-45 production. If not, then it is post war Nationale Volkes Armee or other Warsaw pact production.

The M31 water bottle will have the same three letter and date code, usually on the top cap and neck of the bottle. It is either NSDAP, SA or HJ issue.

The post war Soviet style respirator bag looks gray in the photos.

Post War German de-nazification laws required the removal of swastikas from public view. Many POW's removed the swastika while in captivity. Also defaced by Soviet soldiers when captured and reused.

I had a great uncle killed in Stalingrad and another served on the Eastern front in the cavalry on anti partisan operations. After 1945, everyone was "anti-nazi".......

some more German stuff

Here you go,
Managed to dig up some of these.
