Just bought my first Ruger 10/22!

Hey there guys,

I've posted a WTB in the equipment exchange section for a stainless 10/22, but it seems like no one out there was willing to sell one (proof of how good those .22's are, I guess). Another CGN'er suggested to look in stores for a new one, as most of the used 10/22's are overpriced and shot to crap... and so I took his wise advice. :p

Anyway, a large local sporting goods store had a sale today where everything in store had no tax - including firearms. I passed by and picked up a very special 10/22, the only one in store (they had others, but not like this one).

There was some confusion, as the salesman at the desk couldn't even find it in any catalogue - even the Ruger one - or in his price list (no item number listed)... then another guy came and said that this one was their latest acquisition from the Ruger Corp. and that they only had one of these, as it was their demo. Since I insisted I wanted that one (because of it's good looks and the no tax thing), they assigned a number (and price) off a standard model.

Anyway, it cost me 380$ all in. Very happy with it so far... can't wait to get to the range next week! ;)

The major (visible) difference in this one is the mag release... it is completely flush with the trigger guard extension and doesn't protrude like the older ones - you have to press it in when you want to remove the mag. Too bad, I sort of liked the 'AK' style mag release on the older ones.

P.S. Does anyone know where I could get some extra mags for this? (30 round banana mags or standard mags) Thanks!

Sounds like the price is a little on the steep side, but I guess rifle prices have been climbing for a little while now.

After a few modifications and the addition of a scope, the gun should be looking really good, the high cap magazines are somewhat hard to find for a fair price, if you find steels lips for under $30, I would buy it.

Yeah, firearms went up in $ big time... all of them! The standard stainless 10/22 was listed at $280 in January, but on February 15th (I think), the store updated the price to $335. Ammo took a steep climb too (bought some 9mm and 38 special for a couple of bucks more per box than previously listed).

With the price increase factored in, this one had cost me the same as the 'compact' model 10/22 (short barrel & fully blued). They had the same same price tag, but this one was way nicer and in stainless, of course... and was the newest generation.

Thanks for the mag suggestions, it's appreciated! Any more suggestions are more than welcome.... I need to go high-cap with this baby! (but preferably for cheap). :D

i think you may have been lucky enough to get a metal trigger group.

the factory extended mag release usually comes with the synthetic trigger group. it even has sling swivels installed! lucky you!

it looks like you got yourself a nice little carbine!
 
Almost forgot, the BC speedloader is the best money you'll ever spend and an absolute essential if you have high cap magazines. Lebaron's here in Ontario has em for $28

Thanks! It's definitely metal (aluminum) from what I can see inside and out. I've never owned an older model, despite having owned and handled firearms for many, many years (was collecting military long guns with my dad, even before having my own RPAL). This is essentially my first 10/22, lol...

I wanted to buy one for years, just never got around to it. Now I sort of regret not getting one sooner. Looks like a solid little rifle. :)

Edit: Checked it out, but they don't seem to be listing mags. Their 'accessories' section has nothing but company logos in it and no links to actual products or any pricing. :(

Unless the new 10/22s (with plastic trigger group) are coming with extended mag releases, to the best of my knowledge, they have always been flush. I bought mine 3 years ago, and it was flush (before I replaced it).

Nice looking rifle, I like the laminate stock.

Thanks for the info. The reason I say that is because all the other ones I saw were different. Personally I like the extended mag releases better, but decided to go with this one due to the fact that it's supposedly the newest version of this rifle (according to the store).

Anyway, I may look into some mods later on... and see what little improvements I can do to it, even though it already has a pretty good feel to it right out of the box.
 
actually i doubt very much that you have the "latest version". lately all the new 10/22s have had the synthetic T/G with the extended mag release.

i suspect you were lucky enough to buy an older stock item that may have sat in a warehouse somewhere for a little while. they switched over to the new T/G several months back.
 
Damn, prices did take a hike. You could get the blued target model for $400 last year, it's $512 now at Lebaron. Davidsons in the US does up all kinds of exclusive deals with gun makers. They have a few versions similar to that one.

Oh... I see. I asked both guys at the store if this was a discontinued item (because of the missing catalogue numbers), but they've both been telling me that this is so new that they don't have it listed yet. They had to put it under different stock item # on the receipt.

Anyway, I'm glad you guys approve of the design. I knew nothing about them prior to venturing to the store today, so I believed what they told me. The store's name was LeBaron btw... the one in Montreal on St-Laurent street (I believe that I forgot to mention it earlier).

Yeah... I should've bought a stainless "all weather" 10/22 this past Xmas (synthetic stock)... LeBaron had a deal where everything in store was 10% off PLUS they paid both taxes (firearms included). The standard stainless 10/22 was $280 back then... so it would've cost $252 all in just two months ago, whereas now the same model costs $335 before tax ($385 with tax).

Approx. $80 price increase over a matter of 2 months... nice. :eek:

that is a very nice looking gun. not new though. a friend bought one just like it over a year ago. and the mag release has always been flush to the best of my knowledge.
Ruger actualy has 34 different models you can buy/order.

Looks like mine is a K10/22RB-BBZ model. It says that it's "Distributor Exclusive", lol! Now I feel better! :D


P.S. Since I now know better, I've changed first post title and scrapped the whole 'new generation' thing. Looks like LeBaron has some very qualified staff working there. :rolleyes:

Great looking 10/22 (I've got the same one) the best clips I have found are the Steel Lips from butler Creek they come smoked or clear 25 rds,and for hunting I prefer the 10rds clear. What also goes well is a clip loader I've got a Ramline which isn't to bad, since I taped it together to stop it from spliting apart, don't know about others.
Good thing about these 10/22's is there is tons of stuff out there to play with, it ain't restricted, and cheap to shoot.
