How hot does your barrel get

Hi I shoot alot of trap and usually will go through a box very quickly. I find the barrel gets extremly hot and let it cool down between boxes
Any thoughts on how hot a barrel can get before damage/
 
mine changes colour so really hot.... still just keep on banging them thru... its just a shotgun i don't think you can wreck it
 
Once during a doubles marathon match shooting 100 bird strings and only a couple folks on the line my barrels got so hot they burned my hands! One of the old-timers at my club whose an amazing doubles shooter says his barrels get so hot the image of the clay inverts. Flurry shooting can be even worse because you never pause, you just keep loading and shooting until your team goes through the 200 clays. Great fun!!
 
when i'm blasting away with my mossberg maverick, the barrel will get so hot i can't touch it for a couple minutes. usually takes about 100 round continually fired through to get there though.
 
I did have a cook off once after a 300 or so round (likely more)slug fest.
I couldn't with all honesty say that it was a cook off or malfunction since it was the middle of a bright sunny summer day and therefor couldn't see if the barrel was indeed cherry red.
However, the targets were becoming very blurred due to barrel heat which also scorched a picnic table that it was set down on. Not to mention that my Hogue forend also melted a bit and deformed/expanded to the point that I simply bought a new one.
All in all, was a fun day!


PS: when shotgunning, I wear gloves
 
I've had my 500 to the can't make out the clay for the heat shimmers, that was on a hot day with 200-250 rounds through in a short period of time. When the barrel starts to smoke its time for a break. Or maybe just a beverage.
 
Get them as hot as you want, just don't drop them in the river when they change color.
