I have done a lot of research on SVT-40s. Seen so many for sale 20-30. All have electropenciled blocks and trigger groups (serial number, no other ground off or x'ed out). Maybe some I have missed, but mine is the same. It appears to have a new block and trigger group. Purple/blue blueing. Did they change them all out for new hardware? or was the originals electropenciled? Was there some defect that needed to be rectified?

Those bluing, new parts and electropencil is common with all the rearsenaled SVT's and many other post-WWII firearms (look at the captured K98K's for example)

Was there any defect to be rectified ? Well one thing about these rifles is that they have seen the eastern front, which included a lot of savage fighting in the worst conditions possible for anything made of metal, wood or flesh. Basically, these rifles had to be revamped at some point before being put into reserve should the need arise incase of another large scale conflict.

On my SVT's magazine there are 4 different serial numbers and I can think of a few parts that are not original on it, each rifle may vary of course, after all they just patched them up before packing them for a long while.

Your rifle is the same as mine, 4 serial numbers on the magazine, but rather than a history of what my rifle may have been through and having studied WWII intensively, I know where it might have been, I am looking for facts as to why so many rifles , as a matter of fact, all that I have seen are electropencilled bolts and trigger groups. Way too many to be fact of rebuild. Were they originally electropenciled? The bluing is intact, not black painted like the SKS's, I am looking for a reason why? I do appreciate your replying and nice to know another SVT'er out there....

If all the rifles you inspected were identical, you did not have a good statistical sample. The rifles you describe are recent imports from Ukraine via Germany. Jose in Ste-Catherine, among others, had a bunch.

There are two other groups of SVT rifles that you might encounter. About thirty years ago Globe Arms in Ottawa converted a number of rifles to .303BR and called them Mohawks. Russian ammo was impossible to acquire, but there was lots of .303 ammo. These rifles are ugly, but still qualify as SVTs. The other group are Finnish capture rifles. These have SA on the receiver ring. They are genuine battlefield pickups from dead Russians. The Finns cycled them through their ordnance shops and issued the rifles to their front line troops.

Your reply is just what I am looking for, information about these incredible rifles. Your reply contains some VERY informative facts. I hope other people contribute. My sample of 20-30 rifles is not small, and indicitive of what's available these days. It reflects exactly what I have, but there are reasons for and I am looking for details on the reasons. Just knowledge, just studying. Hey, it's a hobby...laughs...just fun...
