I have an original USGI stock for my m14 problem being the upper screw hole for the butt plate is larger then the screw that Norinco used on the wooden stock.

Is this a common issue or is the hole just worn out?

Hungry here: It's a wood screw... put it aside and use a machine screw/bolt combination (down below).

If so whats the best material to re-fill it with then re-drill

you're not saying whether it's a fiberglas or wood- that's important as the fiberglas takes a nut and bolt affair and to do it propely , there's a retainer in there as well- if it's a wood stock, just match the screw to the size of the hole- any hardware store screw will do

Lemme get this straight....

USGI glass stock, Norinco butt plate ?

The glass stock needs a machine screw/and nut. Don't bother with ordering the USGI equivalent from Numrich or egunparts in New York. They will send you some nut/bolt combination like I'm going to suggest right below....

I like using a # 10 x 24 tpi x 2"long (or a 1 1/2" or a 1 3/4" long). This screw must have a flush head, triangular so it won't interfere with the closing hinged buttplate. I like to glue the nut in place, you can easily see where the nut braces itself to provide resistance in order to secure the buttplate in place.

Forget the official spring loaded nut holder since it's really a little POS.

Does this help?

Yup that pretty much sorts things out.

Provided I can hit a nut and bolt place that will have the correct hardware and a square nut I should be set.

Just from looking at it seeing the bolt hole continues through the butt I wasn't sure what fastner was supposed to live there.

from what i can tell from the diagram, the nut sits in a groove at the end of a channel- put the nut in first, then put your buttplate on, and screw into the nut- it spec's a square nut, and you can do it without the retainer- it also might be easier if you hold the stock vertical with the but up and screw down into the nut- however, hex nuts will work as well

10x24nc is a common thread- any hardware inc cdn tire should have it- the trick will be
to get the correct head- like what hungry said- if worse comes to worse, i know there's a bolt suppy house in edmonton or universal fasteners

it's real simple folks.....

get a 3/16 x 2" inch long taper head stove bolt and nut, canadian tire, 50 of em cost 6 bucks. Get a tube of jb weld and a bit of grease/vaseline and some tinfoil, 1"x1" square. lightly coat the bolt and wipe away excess grease. keep grease away from the nut.

apply a fingernail size dollop of mixed jb weld into the little slot the original nut is supposed to go in. now, insert your stove bolt nut into the jb weld filled pocket and apply another fingernail sized dollop of JB weld burying the nut. Place 1"x1" piece of tinfoil on top of the nut area, covering the jb weld and forcing it to stay in the pocket. Slip a 1.4 inch washer over the stove bolt and insert it into the jb weld filled nut, tighten untill the washer comes flush and tight to the stock and is straight with the hole and pocket. Let cure like this and once fully cured, remove the screw and you now have a permanent fix. the washer can be discarded

*** for those wanting to install a norc buttplate to a usgi fiberglass stock..... one modification that MUST also be done has not been mentioned so far.
The area where the trap door latch sits against the buttstock must be milled out a minimum of 1/8" to allow for proper fit and function. It's a bit hard to explain... I'll post pics maybe later.

if we could make a new usgi stock modification thread as a sticky..... I am willing to do a start to finish with descriptions and photos, how to mod your g.i. fiberglass stock for full norc compatability. Paint job included ;)
