the fur on the back pack, it was cheaper to leave the fur on the pack than to take it off the taned leather cow hide, and it was the style too, goes way back.
"Another kit bag from what era"
RKKA gas mask bag. WWII Red Army.
Fur on German packs was for waterproofing. Yes when wet it would have a distinct odour. Combine this with the smell of leather and Ballistol with it's odour of Anethole and you can capture the smell of the Wehrmacht.
I have the exact same mask, the only difference is the filter. Yours is a canistor type and mine is a cylindrical type.
I paid 20$ for it at a surplus store and they had tons of them. After I bought it I was told that they were actually really poor and barely protected you from tear gas.
How true. A german woman once told me how her uncle came back from the Eastern Front in 1943 a changed man. His only comment: "if the Germans win this war, there is no God in heaven."
And before 1945 the majority of the "anti-nazi" people would have been strong supporters of the 3rd Mental House. After the defeat in the hands of the Allies and the Russians, everyone who supported them or not "suddenly" remembered Uncle Bob, or Cousin Jim who was against the war and the 3rd Mental house before it was over. Which "happens" to be the same reason you didn't "believe" in the war all along supposedly once the Allies and Russians took over. Right. Funny how that happens after most wars and conflicts where everyone who was on the wrong side happens to agree all along with the right side.
Would be like a Officer in the Republican Guard in Iraq saying now that Saddam is dead he was never a "loyal" officer to Saddam's wishes. Right.
