I am looking for opinions on the .223 Savage Model 12 Long Range Precision Varminter.

Has anyone shot one of these? What were your impressions?

I own one and they are very accurate. 1/4" groups at 200 yards, under 2" at 500 yards. 3 hits on a 960 target. As a bench rest shooter I would have preferred to get the single shot, but at the time the only one that was available was a clip version. The best accuracy so far are 69 grain Nosler custom competition. 55 grain bullets lose stability after 400 yards. I have a box of 1000 69 gr Lapua scenars, but I haven't worked up a load yet.
IMR 4064 behind a 69 gr bullet, do the ladder test at 200, tweak around the cluster and good to go!

I have a single shot 12LRPV in .223 with a 1 in 7 twist

Overall I'm pretty happy with it, but did have a bit o' grief with the trigger. The book says it's adjustable from 6-8 ounces to 2.5 lb, mine won't #### if set below 2.5 lbs. Otherwise it's well made, feels solid and the action is silky smooth.

All factory ammo I tried shoots like krap.

Have since jumped into reloading and am getting much better results.

The best results so far have been with Hornady 68 Gr HPBT over 23.3 Gr of VV N-140 seated 0.020 off the lands. That shoots .25" at 100 Yards pretty consistently, and about .5" at 200 yards.

I have yet to develop the perfect combo with 80 Gr Berger VLDs, but have had a few promising results. Am having lots of fun trying to get something to work consistently with the Hornady 75 Gr Amax.

I have not yet shot it beyond 100 yards except for the one occasion at 200 yards.
