Hi Guys,

I am new to the board and looking for help.

I am interested in getting my first AR and I wanted to know what you would suggest for a first unit.

I want to eventually build a race gun so I would like to start out with a gun that I can build on

what does everyone think of:
DPMS
Bushmaster
Stag
Colt
Socom (Quebec)

I am sure there are others that I have not listed so please feel free to enlighten me

I want to use the gun for general shooting but also to compete

Thanks in advance

Welcome, but you really need to search these forums for this info and learn from there.

<yawn>

:)

You can buy a new Norinco "Mil Spec" semi auto M4 clone from ArmsEast for $895 with a full year's warranty. Then spend $500 on 1,000 rounds of ammo. After you've fired 1,000 rounds through one, you'll have a whole lot better idea of exactly what you want, and you'll still be able to sell your Norinco for a decent price, or use parts of it for something else. You can't lose.

Go with what this guy said, it's good advice ;)

thanks Guys

And in my original post I mentioned race gun and by this I meant for a three gun shoot

On the Norinco idea I think I agree

I saw some posts and the only thing of concern that I saw was the finish

Does anyone have anything more on that and the overall quality?

I guess when you get a gun for half the cost of the others you get what you get

Once Again thanks to all for the info

From what I've seen (which was enough to convince me to buy one) the uppers are full military specification, full auto bolt, shrouded firing pin, staked carrier key (not MOACKS staked but staked none-the-less) chrome lined barrel and chamber with M4 ramp cuts. The rear iron sight is an A2. The lowers are your basic lower, but with ambi safety and mag release, and your basic uncomfortable craptastic pistol grip and six position stock. There is, on the ones I handled, some slop between the upper and lower, but contrary to popular fiction this doesn't hurt the accuracy if you hold the rifle the same way every time, and to be fair I've seen similar slop in some brand name rifles and CF issue rifles.

I could tell you the usual blah blah blah, every big brand is fine, depends on what you want, etc, etc...

In few words: start with a Stag, get it at Armseast, tell Walt what you want and he'll fix you up. And no I don't get any money from Walt for saying that.

Are you sure ArmsEast has them? They are not mentioned on the site, only at Lever Arms. I would prefer not to deal with Lever if I can avoid it!

So far on detailed inspection they are as advertised, functional solid guns with relatively ugly finish which may not be all that durable. I figure that I can always refinish it if it gets too ugly. I'm hoping now to be able to shoot mine on Monday.
