Scope Mount that will work well with UTG Tri-Rail handguard

Hi all,

I have a UTG tri-rail handguard, and bought the 6" rail extension to mount my scope on, as you can see in the photo below:

After I first posted this photo I was asked how well this holds a zero... turns out not well, unfortunately. I've taken it out to the range a couple of times, and the scope doesn't hold a zero (~80 rounds through it now). The last time I went, for instance, I took my first shot at the 100 yard target, and was 3" to the right. I adjusted the scope 3 MOA to the left, and took another shot, and was right on the bullseye. Shot 3 was similarly good, and then shot 4 was up and the the left significantly. This same kind of thing is what I saw over the course of 40 rounds. I figure the most likely culprit is the extension rail shifting. I think the significant sight deviations may only have occurred when ejected brass actually impacted the scope mounting rail, which was one in every 4 or 5 shots, from what I could tell.

So now I'm looking at getting a proper railed scope mount with three points of contact, but I'm wondering if any of them are going to have problems mounting with the UTG Tri-Rail handguard in place. Mostly I'm not sure if any of the good mounts can be mounted with the tri-rail already using the hole on the left side of the receiver (you can see on the photo how the rail system uses it as a rear mounting point).

I guess I could always take the UTG rail off, but I'd like to keep it just for looks, even if I'm no longer going to actually mount anything on it.

Thanks for any suggestions :).

I tried the exact same set up as you have pictured there and it does not work. You will not be able to mount a conventional M14 scope mount with the UTG rail in place. However......maybe hold off on buying anything for now. One of the other M14 guru's here (45ACPKing) is building a rear ring mount that fits on the stripper clip guide. This clip mount rail is being designed to work with the UTG rail so you can mount normal optics......the same arrangement as a knights armament rail system but much cheaper.

I'd wait and see if this will pan out, as you've already spent the money for the rail.

It does work

The .45 ACP KING stripper clip picatinny works on my Sage stock, and also works on an Ultimak and a UTG rail - no flex, returns to zero.
He will sell a pile of them once in production.

Maybe it has something to do with that POS scope your using? I wouldn't expect too much from a 100$ scope on a m-14, they are known to be hard on optics.

Do you have access to an other scope you could try on the UTG rail? or maybe try your nc star scope on another rifle and see if that is your problem?

The scope could be a problem yes, but the extension rail used in this application has no good support. I think if you tried using a good quality optic with that setup, you are going to pound the living hell out of expensive glass.

I use the UTG rail with a Bushnell red dot mounted just forward of the receiver, no extension. Works great so far, with approximately 100 rounds in. I think the rail itself is pretty solid and that your issue is with the extension.

Or the NC Star scope. Try using a better quality optic and see if you still have issues. As many have already said Chicom optics are hit and miss.

How well do those front rails actually mount?

My front heat shield is pretty loose with just the spring clamp holding it on. Do the setscrews used on railed fore ends hold well enough that you can hold a real zero?

It could well be the scope as well as the rail extension. I'll mess around with it some tonight, but I'm reasonably sure the rail extension is playing at least some part in this problem. This scope mount that 45ACPKing is making seems like the ideal solution though, for that portion of the problem. I would rather get a new scope mount, and see if it's still no good before buying a new scope.

The UTG rail fits under the front furrel (I'm not sure how to spell it) it also has 2 barrel clamps and also screws into the left side of the reciever. The tolerances are tight enough that I had to knock mine in place with a rubber mallet. Those rails will not be moving.

I got a similar set up on my m14 only i'm using a clone knight rail with the extension rail that fab sells. The results so far have been excellent,80 rounds and the falcon 1.5-5 is dead on.If my crappy clone rail is hangin in I can't imagine yours failing.

yup....... i have the part you guys with the UTG rails, utimak rails and sage stock need to complete the scope mounting option.... without the need for an extra rail to attach on top of your handguard type rail.
I have dealer application in hand, my machinists are working double time to get a few items ready once i debut as a dealer.
don't expect these things to be availlable right away, we are still tooling up to have them produced faster.

Hey 45ACPKing, with your KAC style set-up, has there ever been a problem with brass hitting the bottom of the optic since there is no bridge type mount guarding it?

my rifles all throw thier brass to the side and away..... haven't had any brass dings show up on my scope yet..... and no bad feedback from the half dozen guys that have been secretly testing them ;)
