I want to go on a few gopher hunts this spring and summer, however I am not sure how to get started. I have lived in Edmonton for the last five years, but am originally from BC where I did most of my hunting, and therefore have very little knowledge of the Alberta rural areas. I am looking for somewhere where I can hunt gophers, and later coyotes, with .223, or greater, within an hour, or two from Edmonton. I am a responsible shooter, looking for some advice on areas, how to avoid hassles and headaches, and who to talk to etc. Thanks

Section 666(a)(b)(c) of the CGN code states: That no none shall use the term "gopher hunt" nor "gopher hunting" for any reason. All CGN members shall say Gopher shoot or gopher shooting :p:p Good luck and have fun!!:D:D

I think your best bet is go pick up a county / land owner map for the areas that you are interested in shooting on. Most farmers / ranchers are happy to have responsible people help thin the gopher population.

I was in the same boat as you. New to a city and had no one to show me the ropes.

It was the 1st nice day in April last year and I took a drive out in the country and finally got the guts to knock on a ranchers door and ask if I could shoot gophers.

He was more than happy to let me do it. He gave me his phone number and said that when ever I wanted to come out just give a call and leave a message on what kind of car I was in so he knew that was me out there.

Good luck

Thanks everyone for the all the info. By all means keep it coming. Just to add to the questions, does anyone know specifically what areas around the City of Edmonton would be good for me to start knocking on doors (i.e. on highway 16 E, or W, towards Morinville, etc.)? It would save me driving around aimlessly looking for squeaks.

Are they out in numbers?

What is the situation around Hanna, Medicine Hat, Taber etc right now for gophers. I am need of a fix but I am 10 hours away from the shooting grounds and don't want to drive all the way down to find out they are still sleeping.

Thanks,

Greg

Tshelrud, try going south east towards tofield or so, highway 14 or 21 that'll take you where you wanna go, and like the boys told you, find a nice spot of land and go knock on the owner's door... happy shooting

Good eye Hakx. I'll be with 408 Sqn (TACHEL) for 10-12 months for some on the job training. Figured I'd check out the countryside while I'm there, make the most of my time eh.
