What is involved in the S.O.C?

I thought any one who was a member of said range was a S.O at least that what it says on my membership.

There is a diference between being a range officer at your range and being a S.O. in IDPA......the least of which is being well versed in the rules of the sport

Very difficult to SO an IDPA match without knowing the rules of the sport and how they are to be applied wouldn't you agree.

not only the rules of the sport but more importantly how to score the stage... those dam targets are notgoing to score themselves ;) ;) ;)

I keep shooting them till they are nuetralized... so they ain't going to say shyt about the score ;)

Wes,
I had to take my shoes off to score your points down.

Didn't have to use much tape either, come to think of it.

so the rules are considered too complicated for a 19 year old to understand when holding the timer, even though they understand them with a gun in their hand.

Good point Madness.......

I can see having to be over the age of 18 as you cannot get a RPAL until you are 18. When my son is 18 he will have been shooting competative handgun for 6 years so I would hope that he has the experience.

That said if the IDPA rules are "universal" then it may be the case that they are taking into account those states that have a minimum age of 21 to own a handgun.

This isn't a rules course it is a Safety Officer course and the instructors have set an age limit for this course. What is your point?

Bob I think that Madness is asking in his own special way what the rationale is behind the age restriction is.

That said I do not know what if any there is for a IPSC R/O (but I am going to find out). I do know that they have to be BB qualified.

Edit because I found out.

Any current (Black Badge trained) member who is not currently part of the IPSC Ontario "Future" program (under 18 years of age) may participate in a Range Officer course, provided that the member has been an active competitior for at least one year and has competed in at least three Level II IPSC Matches.

So IPSC basically says you have to be 18 which makes sense. However I would suggest that it also state that you have a RPAL in Canada. Otherwise you would not be able to R/O other juniors.

I think it's more than that. From page 53 of the IDPA Rule Book:

B. Safety Officer.
Certified Safety Officers are the people whose purpose and goal is
for all the shooters at the match to have a safe and enjoyable day at
the range by directing the shooter through the course of fire.
Safety Officers must be at least 21 to be IDPA certified. To
become a certified Safety Officer, you must participate in a safety
officer class taught by one of the safety officer instructors listed on
the IDPA web site or an area coordinator.
The Safety Officer is one of the most vital and visual
representatives of IDPA. Contestants interact with the Safety
Officers more than any other official at a match.

To add to the rule book restrction there are clubs who are very selective as to who becomes a Safety Officer - believe it or not age doesn't automatically get you in. I know of one club that does it by invitation only. Such invitations are extended ony after senior club officials have observed the shooters demeanor both while shooting and off the range.

Ar our club annual refresher courses are conducted in the Spring and prior to any major match we are conducting.

For those who are active in either IDPA or IPSC none of the above will come as a surprise. We take the conduct of our matches seriously. We want them to be run safely and the rules administered fairly.

agree 100% just don't see what age has to do with it. When I was 19 my ability to safely run a range was light years beyond that of some 21+ I see out there at IDPA matches. If you want to grow the sport I think that's a rule that should be reconsidered.

So join IDPA and suggest the change to Bill Wilson the owner of IDPA

Madness

The age limit is but one criteria. While I agree with your statement that age isn't always an indication of maturity the rule is there right now and is but one criteria. Until it is changed we have to accept it.

I do from time to time talk to HQ on various rules and suggestions I receive from our members. PM me your IDPA member number and I will be happy to address your concerns when next I talk to HQ.
