Great little shotgun. Very versatile (removable chokes; shot or slugs) and compact (36" long overall, and 20" long when taken apart). Similar to a coach gun, but I prefer O/U (better barrel regulation, slimmer forend).

I'm looking for .22LR inserts to increase its versatility even more (easier to carry a box of 50x .22LR than 50x shotshells!).

Back to bush guns,

Tough to beat a lever action. Pumps are good too. Bolts are by far the slowest for follow up shots.

Ummm I think i had it al wrong......I think i will go sell all my guns and buy on of those sophistrocratic sling shots and irish clubs!
 
I personally think optics rule out a bush gun. Iron sites only. For me my camp gun is a
.44 Henry big boy
 
On the subject of bushguns i've been looking at the new ruger compact in .243. This rifle will be used for the thick bush surrounding the lowermainland of BC for blacktail deer. Has anyone used one or know someone who has.

Of note is that the Ruger #1 RSI is only 36.5" butt to crown, a full 2"'s shorter than the Marlin's, and the 74 carbine.
The caliber does'nt give up much for mix bag hunting either 139-140gr. bullets can do upwards of 2550fps, making it suitable for even a bit of open country hunting as well.

My idea of a bush gun like some pointed out is size and weight, something that is smaller and lighter than your average rifle.

I carry a ruger ultralight in 30-06. it is smaller and really light which makes carrying it through the brush that much easier.
 
I like my Marlin 336 30-30 for tromping bush and especialy when dogging. If you want a fancy sight get a Williams FP series aperture sight. A scope in brush is a giant pain in the ass and almost impossible to acquire a fleeing target when you bring the gun up fast
