Wild Pigs in Saskatchewan

We have a few spots around here where we are getting a few but most of the time we seem to be chasing ghosts. We got 5 last year and one this year out of our group but the last three times out have been a bust . I put a pile of miles on looking and it seems like we just missed em. The land owners around the area know we are after them and are for us killing em off but we seem to just miss them . We were out on Sunday and covered all the usual haunts for them and no luck then I get a call tonight from one farmer saying they were in his yard today . Look for them in the meanest thickest deepest coulees you know of with a constant water supply like a spring. They are mean a hell as I was charged last year while not carrying a gun and luckily when I screamed like a school girl it changed direction and charged the guy with the gun . He made a hip shot at 10' that rang my ears but saved me having to use my first aid course. There is a large herd on the west side of Kenosee some at Outlook and I have seen them at Mistatum too.
 
They breed uber fast so the numbers ebb and flow in areas. Look at a map and draw a triangle between Saskatoon, Prince Albert and North Battleford. Ive seen them and heard of them in various areas in that general area.
 
On CBC this evening some guy in Kipling said they had shot 400. He said some charged him lol.

Years ago when I was bow hunting near Archerwill there were a few piglets in the field. I saw a few pics in an email last year that was supposedly from Melfort and those guys shot two really big tuskers.
 
.223 is probably not ideal but if you search the Yankee boards there have alot killed by UMC .223 55gr FMJ. We see alot of this ammo up here and it is cheap.

I am thinking a Nosler Partition would work great.

If I ever get my Type 97 I am going to load up some heavier bullets for it and give it a go....
 
The smallest we use is 300 mags. I shoot a 450 marlin for them but I am gonna switch to a high cap. short barrel shot gun with slugs and 00 buck . I think the shotty will be better on the quad . The one good thing about hunting them is there is no regulations as you are hunting livestock as they are not game animals for the time being. I imagine once the DNR find out that a few guys are hunting them they will try to slap some regs. on it but for now there is no laws for hunting them. They are the same as shooting cows in the back forty you can use what you want and how you want.
 
I used a 30-06 when I hunted them in Germany last winter. Most of the pigs are small and a .223 would be Ok , but some big tough boars would be a little too much for a little rifle like that. Especially at night. The Germans hunt mostly at night, pigs are most active then. I wish we could do that here, we could be much more effective at eradicating them. Following are a few pics of my hunt in Cologne. I shot a couple of smallish boars, 40 kg. or so. It was kinda bizarre shooting pigs from treestands at night, 200 M from houses, in the center of a large city. Roughly equivalent to hunting in Stanley park in Vancouver. The Germans were very pro-hunting from what I saw. I'd love to try hunting pigs at home.

If you read the globe article the guy was using a .223 and had to shoot it 3 or 4 times. I'll use my .243 I think with a 95gr SST. Maybe the 45/70 while pushing bush. Marlin Guide Guns rock!

IF I were to use a .223 it will have 1 in the chamber and 10 in the mag.:evil:

11 shots from .223 is going to stop him for sure as long as you hit him.

We used to butcher on the farm and .22 LR was all we EVER used.

It dropped everything from Beef to Pigs...mind you these pigs might try and fight back.:eek:
 
I don't believe these are the average farm pig that has just turned feral. If I'm reading all of the articles correctly, they are wild boars that were domesticated in Europe and then brought over during the whole diversification era of farming. Emu, ostrich, elk for example.

These little buggers are curious and found ways out of their pens and returned to the wild.

But I'm not an expert. Its all just stuff I found on the web... and we all know what that's like !

All I know.. is I want to get one and have one hell of a bbq this Canada Day.

Ditto: 12 gauge pump actions with good iron sites are the cat's a@@!! ;)

PS: Most provinces do not care about magazine capacity in manual repeaters this type of hunting, therefore unplugged and/or extended magazine tubes are just more life insurance for yourself. :) :)

The only drawback to this choice is lack of distant effective range.......

Hopefully the folks who have hunted wild boar back here (before that was illegal) will chime in with their experiences. I do not think any of them would choose a .223 as a weapon of choice..........
