A friend of mine who i coyote hunt with brought this to my attention. When do coyotes have their pups and how long are the pups dependant? Don't really want to shoot one with a den full of pups.

They breed in Feb. / March and give birth in April / May. I'm sure this is a little different depending on what part of the country. I don't know how long they are completely dependent on their parents though.

Actually not...very difficult to train, absolutely unreliable. I don't like the fact that baby animals may starve, but vermin is vermin. I shoot coyotes when I see them, regardless. Some small comfort howver, I'm told that often if there are many coyotes in an area, other #####es with litters may adopt the pups and transfer them to their dens if the parents are killed.

Coyote gestation is +/-63days - weening occures after 7 weeks. On the CDN Great Plains coyotes generally breed in late Feb.

So basically good to go after turkey hunting

not quite, just because they are not nursing doesn't mean their not dependant on the adults for food. They can't hunt for themselves till the end of summer at the earliest. Think of an eight week old puppy, how much longer before thy aren't dependant on either thier owner or mother?

I think a Yote pup might make a good pet.

I know a family whose kids dug a single yote pup out of a den while it was still very young, eyes still closed. They raised it (by hand at first) and kept it for years as a pet. They said it was an awesome pet to have. They are avid hunters, but won't hunt yotes or wolves as a result of this.

I've no problem hunting yotes, but leaving a den of babies to starve to death is some cold s**t.

I'm kind of glad coyotes and wolves are out of season for a few months that time of year in the Yukon.

X2. 'though they're pests to some, they are very closely related to dogs. I prefer not to kill mammals if it's likely that there are dependent young in the nest/den that will slowly starve to death.
