Swiss Arms - really worth $3000+?

Yup.

I love my Classic Green. Worth every cent.

My old man (who could be described as a "fudd in transition") said "how much?!?!" when I told him what it cost. But: whenever we shoot together he always says "let's shoot that Swiss rifle... It's pretty accurate, hey?".

Now I'm no expert on AR variants but I will pose something for discussion: The $3k + pricetag on the SAN rifles is typically compared to the AR-15 and variant price. Outside of the fact that I can shoot my SAN CG anywhere it is legal to discharge a firearm, does an out-of-the-box AR shoot as accurately and reliably as the OOTB SAN, or does a significant amount of "tweaking" $$ have to be spent to get it into the same category?

The gap in the price difference between the Sigs and ARs of similar quality has rapidly narrowed in the last couple of years. Add to that the difficulty in getting some AR stuff up here, and in some cases the AR could very well be more expensive. (look at Noveski:rolleyes:)

There are so many configurations of ARs out there, so let's presume a 20" barreled factory gun. There are only a few 'out of the box' variants of ARs that I'd stack up against the non-restricted Sigs, and the majority of them would have 'National Match' somewere in the nomenclature....
and likely only if you went with one from some of the better brands like Colt, Armalite, RRA, Noveski....

The beauty of the AR system is that to get them to shoot really well, all you need when you boil it down is a really good barrel, and a really good barrel I would go with wouldn't be manufactured by any of the big AR guys (except Colt's).

Spending $3000.00 on a rifle is ok by me. I believe the firearm is worth it as long as it stays "non-restricted".

re:

Pretty much.

. Don't kid yourself... if that rifle was Restricted in status, it probably would be half the price.

Ummmmmmmmmmm.... the other versions of this rifle that ARE in the restricted class are in FACT the same price! These are fantastic rifles that I feel are worth the price. I have a CQB 9"barrel that is stamped "SIG". This is my favorite rifle to shoot and I do have alot of high end toys that "go bang"! Most folks who balk at the price and say to buy two AR`s for price of a Swiss Arms/SIG have never shot or owned one of these rifles. Just sour grapes as the price keeps this rifle out of most hands! I have 3 Sabre Defence AR`s and just sold a Colt and a Armailite. The Sabre Defence product, although one of the finest AR`s I have ever shot or owned (better than Colt, Armalite, or Bushmaster in my opinion) do not come close to the Swiss Arms rifles. But again, we are comparing apples to oranges. The rifles are of two different designs and operating principles. You will not find many guys who "actually" own these that will complain about the cost versus the value/quality of the rifle. Don`t get me wrong, an AR is an AR and a SA is an SA. I plan to buy one more Sabre Defence XR15 M4 once Wolverine takes stock this summer. I may also buy another Swiss Arms as well!

it`s worth it if you think you need to have one and can afford one. $3000 is alot of coin for a paper puncher non restricted or not. I`d rather have a pimped norc M4, CZ858 and cases of ammo and accesories for same price. I`d be scared to death to scratch a rifle that expensive and it`s alot of money tied up in a safe queen.

My Classic Green is a great 'yote gun. That was about 55% of the reason to purchase.

(The remaining 45% was to piss off liberals/dippers/anits... I bought it when the unholy trinity was attempting their coup).

In no way is it a "range only" rifle.

A SAN CQB (which I'd really like to get one day) vs. a short AR would be a very interesting comparison.

You say that until you look one over ;). It's like a Swiss watch versus a digital Timex. They both tell time and work but I know which one I prefer.

The SA rifles are worth every cent, I don't own one (I will, I will, soon, when my wallet really allows me)but I know enough on these rifles that they are as reliable as AKs(the actions are cmparable), and far more reliable than ARs.
And I still find the SA CQB to be the most beautiful "short rifle" out there, it's just ###y. ;)

The real downside to SAN ownership is the availability of magazines these days. Not to mention the price of magazines when they are available.

I guess that's a factor to consider when purchasing SAN...

They're worth every penny. It's the same argument that goes on. Would you buy a Norinco sig clone or a real sig? Some people are willing to pay a little extra for quality. Either you gun collection consists of Norinco's, beat up milsurps and the dreams of stuff you wish you had or you can save up, get rid of the crap, and get decent guns. The time will come when you really wont want to sell anything you have.

The SKS forum is further down.

Is it worth 3k? Damn right it is. Just look at say a common AR setup:

Standard AR-15: $1500
Gas piston system: $700
Bipod: $200
Click on sling: $50
Folding Stock: $150

=2600. Plus taxes and shipping for all the parts and your pretty close to the price of a new Swiss arms. Nevermind the costs of better materials (steel over aluminum), Swiss design, manufacturing and quality control.

I paid $2500 for mine. Excellent condition with only 300 rounds down the pipe. Barrel life is 30,000 rounds, so there is nothing to worry about there.

Not only that, but it is my favorite gun. Just looking at it makes me want to head to the range. Every couple of days I get the strong urge to open up the gun cabinet and handle it. Makes me all warm and fuzzy every time :D.

I also heard they damage brass, but not too much, nothing your press can't fix.
Brass will damage the gun more than the gun will damage brass, the usual spot next to the ejection port will show some wear after a lot of rounds, but it's part of what makes this rifle what it is, it also ejects your brass all in the same corner for easy pickup from what I heard. ;)
