Yes the slide stop should have been small and worthless,but I have a Colt Com that is 5 digit ser# and made in 1917 and the PONY is in the rear,whats up with that?

Well Bob, the correct slide stop should have been 'small' but they are far from "worthless". Try and find one these days & if you do that isn't made from "unobtainium"....
Correct slide stop for early Colts look like this [note the undercut]:
On your 5 digit serial number Colt commercial government model the rampant pony should be at the rear of the left side of the slide:
On the Colt 1911 military models the rampant pony moved to between the patent script after pistol serial number 285,###

Any chance a Com Colt 1917 being nickle plated at the factory? This one is like nickle plated everwhere,where would you send off to get that kind of answer? You can e-mail me at robjcole@swbell.net and I can send you pictures, or not. I know you are busy.

)Hi Bob - I don't know of any Colt government models from that era that were factory nickle finish. 'Course the only way to determine 100% is to write to Colt on the serial number [with the appropriate fee in US dollars] and they will tell you what finish it left the factory in. Also, when & where it was first shipped to.
