OK I have a job offer up in Timmins ON and it's pretty good. I looked in the regs and nice seasons for pretty much everything, also lots of crown land in the area. But what's the real story, is this a good hunting area to live in? Say within 1hr drive of the city, will the hunting be good, or do I need to be driving farr away? I want to hear from someone with "feet on the ground" up there!!

I gotta let them know by Tues, so I need info asap, thanks

Matt

No deer to speak of - moose, grouse, hare and bears. Go north and you are into clay belt swamp. Go south towards Gogama on Hi 144, good fishing and nicer country. Best hunting and fishing are west and south of Timmins. Some decent waterfowl hunting as you go east into the "agricultural" area.

Be aware that it is one of the few "boom" towns we have in northern Ontario as a result of gold being high priced still. All other resource based communities in our area suffering from crash in base metal and forest industries.

Living accomodations may be a bit tight - I wouldnt rush out and buy a high priced house until we see what the price of gold does - a bunch of folks in Sudbury found this out the hard way in the last couple of months.

I grew up in Timmins and don't recall there being a rod & gun club...there was enough crown land and dirt roads with gravel pits to keep us busy. A lot of guys will chase partridge at the end of Pine Street. Try Alberts Army Surplus downtown if it's still there and they can point you to some good spots.

Lots of Moose and Bear, waterfowl is decent and partridge was always good but I haven't been there in about 15 years so likely things have changed somewhat.

Spotting scope would be somewhat limited use the bush is pretty thick in most areas.

Not many moose tags for Timmins WMU29?, Lots of tag alder bush, lots of clear cutting, more than enough drinking holes in town, home of Shania and she drops in our camp every year after a few bottles at the end of the days hunt? Take a lot of bug juice with you and enjoy yourself?

Really....Shania drops in to your hunt camp ? What are you drinking Ill make sure I bring some of it to my camp.

As said,

If you can get drawn for a Tag (WMU 29,30 and 31) there is a good moose population. Plenty of Black Bear, Grouse, Ducks, Geese.

How far do have to drive? You can drive 15-20 minutes and start hunting or you can drive for days. there is a huge network of logging roads.

We have seen a few deer, basically Hen's teeth and no open season anyways.

The Few white moose are Near Foleyet (1 hour west) and they are a no no in WMU 30 and 31 .

Note the only Moose Actual archery Draw is in in 29. No reserved tags that I know of in 30 and 31 (but you can still bow hunt two week earlier).

There is a Shooting Club / Range (Golden Nugget) and one Trap club (on Goldmine Road) that I know of.

Also there is an actual "Rod and Gun club" at the Big Star Lake, dont' think its an actual shooting club with a range.

The fishing is good, more lakes than you can fish in your whole life.

Anymore questions ? let us know.

Matt.

I am from the Timmins area. Yes, the hunting is very good up here, lots and lots of crown land, good moose, hare, grouse, bear and duck populations.

Let me know if you end up moving up this way and maybe we can go hunting together this fall. I am actually 2 hours from Timmins. Where exactly are you planning on moving?

It is also very pretty and the air is very clean up here. Not to mention the fishing is out of this world!

There are deer here. And if your not living IN Timmins, the cost of housing is VERY cheap!

Deer around Kirkland Lake ? yes. Good luck finding one in Timmins. Especially after this winter. How long is Deer season in WMU 28 ? like two days ?

Prices are coming down in Timmins, more of a buyers market than it was two years ago. Its all relative, depends from where you are moving from ? The cheaper housing would be at least 45 minutes from Timmins, not exactly practical if you work in town.

I dont' have all the lowdown on house prices, dont' listen to me check MLS, 95% of houses for sale here are posted on website.

Deer season here is a month long for bow and almost 2 weeks for rifle/shotgun/muzzleloader. I don't bother with deer season here, compared to where I was born and raised, there are no where near the number of deer here as down south. But moose is a different story :D

Good old Timmins... my old stomping grounds. I lived there for 32 years until I decided to move even further north to the arctic tundra. I don't recal ever seeing any deer traveling all those timber roads but there is plenty if good hunting and fishing in the area. Good Luck.
