It is obvious from this and other Canadian shooting forums, that there is a shortage of cheap shotshells in Canada.

Why are we not shooting cheap central European shells like the Sellier and Bellots or Azots. Perhaps these shells are no longer at a low price? I don't know.

What I do know is that the federal goverment put some type of an import tax or embargo on the European manufacturers in the 70's to prop up C.I.L. Is this goverment order still in effect?

Please comment on anything you might know why those cheap European shells are not in our stores. Yes I remember the burnt gunpowder from these shells stunck like Sxxt, but that can't be the only reason they are not on the shelves.

I was down in the States in January for my honeymoon and usually are down at least once every couple of months. In the last couple of years our ammo has slowly equaled out. They do have more ammo choices than us though. For instance, you can't get Wolf ammo here in Manitoba. But in the States it's cheaper than snot. But most places the ammo costs are similar.

cheap ammo

Clever Mirage from Italy used to be a less expensive alternative, but with the Canadian buck vs the Euro, this is no longer a great buy. If I lived in Ontario I'd be reloading shot shells, as you can buy lead shot for a lot less dough than here in Alberta. FS

In the Calgary area AAs have gone to $100.00/flat. This year some are doing a group purchase and buying Kent Sporting loads for about $60.00/flat. I think it will be better than super target or top gun.

I've only been able to pick up the odd Kent hull at the range over the past year. What are the Sporting like to reload? As I recall the hulls were fairly dark blue on the ones I picked up and the wad was a separate tapered part like the other cheaper shells. I think I found the few that I tried to be a little longer than Remingtons and Winchesters. I recall getting dished crimps with them and thinking at the time I might try a cardboard disk on top of the shot to get a better crimp.

Most shooter who shoot Kent do not bother to pick up the hulls. The few that do, usually only load them once.

who is ordering kents

who is a dealer that kent will sell to that is passing on the savings to the shooters. Need international loads badly and we can do 100 flats between us saskatoon boys.

about the cheapest shells i have come across are the challenger shells at 65 for a flat and that was at Ontario gun services in Clinton if you want his phone number give me a pm

Admittedly stupid question - why?

Don't know! My comment was just an observation. Where I shoot, most let the cheap stuff drop. I only know one fellow who loads kent and he lets them drop after one reload. I really like the kent factory load but I got lots of winchester components, and out here we are knee deep in once fired AAs. Usually the only thing I give a second try are older AAs and a bunch of older RXPs.

I went back and checked the Kent shells I had picked up. They were pristine when I picked them up, but after one reloading they were splitting much as has been said. So, I'm not going to bother anymore. The crimps also dished at the settings I use for Winchester and Remington hulls.

... why are we not shooting cheap central European shells like the Sellier and Bellots or Azots. Perhaps these shells are no longer at a low price?

Exactly ... Sellier & Bellots and Rios, for example, seem to cost as much or more than "promo" shells from the big three. Besides the cartridges themselves, ( duties and a low Cdn $ ) the the long haul shipping costs put the former "cheapy" shells up into or beyond the price of US "promo" shells

Challenger & Kent can sometimes be found for a little less than the "promos" and generally, IMHO, are of better quality. Although I've never had any problems with them, some experiance difficulties with Kent's brass ... the few that I've observed, more often as not, related to O/U's with sloppy extractors. The half dozen or so guys that I shoot regularly with, have no problems with Kent or Gamebore's in their 682 Gold E's, 686, Perazzi MT-6, 391's or Browning 425. No problems with my DT-10 or either of the 391's.
