Just wondering which rate of twist is best for the 35whelen cartridge? Don't know alot about the caliber and i notice that in the Rem 700 CDL the twist rate is 10 and in the 7600 Pumps it is 16?

Can someone explain to me?
Thanks

I don't think Remington used any thing other than 1/16.; If you are having a new barrel screwed on I suggest you try either 1/14 or 1/12. 1/14 does it for me.

The ROT is 1:16" in the CDL, not 10"...

35 Whelen 4 Satin Blue 24" 16" 44 1/2" 7 1/2

I've often read that 1:12 is best, but I'm sure there's lots of opinions on that here...

twist rate as quoted in the Sierra loading manual for the 700, 7400, 7600 is 1 in 16.... if your's is stamped 1 in 10 then it'd be a safe bet it's what it says..

x2 on that
IMO in 35Whelen - 16" up to and including 250s - 14" if over that weight are planned for - 12" if 310s or over are the rifle's staple diet.

That said, today these 286gr spire pts. seemed to be flying "nose on" out of my 16" twist Rem700 Classic. The holes in paper were all perfect - no pitching/yawing discernable to me - 4 shots into 2 3/8".

...so I'm sure it will work in a Whelen.
Yep - it does in my shooters. I've got three 35Whelens with 16 twists and two 350RemMags with the same twist. 250s - both spitzers and RNs - stabilize well in my experience at Whelen speeds. If 280s and 310s were on the regular menu I'd choose 14" or 12". Although my 16" twist 700classic seems to stabilize 286s OK as this 200 yd target suggests I think - http://35cal.com/images/targ286gr_200yd.jpg

WhelenB: at usual jacketed velocity 1/16 does work. Go to cast bullets (358009, 287 grains) and start them at 1950 and they aren't so great at 200 yards. I tested 2 Remington 700's and they both keyholed or missed the target. 1/14 shot good groups with the same load/bullet. On the other hand not every one shoots heavy cast bullets.

Thanks for the info stocker

True enough.
Also those 358009 (3589) moulds are very hard to find. I have a few hundred 358009 GC bullets from a commercial caster but have not really done any meaningful testing with them yet. I have a 14 twist too so I'm good if the 16s won't work.

WhelenB : NOE did a group buy run of 358009 moulds on the castboolits forum. Swede may still have some spares on hand if one interests you.

Thanks but I looked into that and I think that ship had sailed before I knew it was leaving. But I would have bought one probably. Also I wondered about whether or not they were actual Lyman moulds or some other makers.

WhelenB: I think they were copies made by NOE, same maker who provided the 358318 copies. They make a first class mould from aluminum alloy blocks. My 358009 is a Lyman and I just sold an identical one to a friend. Also have a single cavity Lyman 358318 but it will see less use since I got the 3 cavity from NOE. Keep checking the Vendor Sponsor forums at Castboolits for the 358009's.
