I am having trouble finding the Sako 3 ring Optilock mount for my TRG-42, the stores that I have talked to, either don't know what I am talking about, or have been unable to get them in the past. Anyone know who has them or could bring them in?

Richard Near of Near Manufacturing, Camrose Ab makes bases for the Sako TRG 22/42. His bases are top quality and are used worldwide. I got a blast for posting his site prior because he is not a sponsor here but his number is 1 866 608 2441. If you search Near Manufacturing you will get it. He is very accomodating and has very good customer service. I have 3 of Richards 25 moa bases, two for H-S Precision and one for a Remington 700. You pay for what you get. All my rifles have Near Bases. Hope this helps.

contact Stoegers directly for the 3 ring mount. As nice as Richards stuff is, the 3 ring mount kicks ass. I love mine, and 757Fixer loves his.

I have the dovetail slots on my TRG-41. I mounted a Nightforce scope (can you say heavier than most scopes) with the Sako 2-ring Optilock base/rings. The mount lasted about 60 shots. The Tikka mounts lasted about 5 shots. You notice these things when your shots at 100 yards start wandering about 3 to 4 inches each time. I installed a Near base (20moa) coupled with NF steel rings, all is well with my 338LM. Cost a lot of money to mount a scope on my TRG-41, but is worth every penny when you see the results. The Sako 3-ring tactical mount costs about $600, the combination I use is about $400. If you're determined to get the Sako tactical mount, phone Shooters Choice out of Waterloo Ontario, they can order one. Could take months if the distributor has none in stock.

Might be obvious, but have you tried the shooting edge? They had every accessory except cheekpiece spacers a couple months ago.

Near bases +1

I tried the Sako rings on my TRG and went to a 20moa picatinny base (Near) and Nightforce rings, and had zero movement. since changed up the base to the newer Near 20 moa with the lugs. Beautiful rail. I would do it again ina heartbeat. using similar system on two other rifles.
Whatever works though...

X2 on The Shooting Edge

I called Stoeger to get a part and they told me directly that TSE had the best stock of parts and accessories for the TRG's.

They also stock the NEAR bases (because that's what I ended up buying).

Thanks for all the info guys, after researching the cost of the different options, I went with the Sako 3 ring mount. It turned out to be cheaper than Near, the finish matches the rifle perfectly, and it was local to me.

don't forget to post pics.
One thing I've never understood is why the 34mm 3 ring setup isn't Optilok like the other size?

I think you made the right choice, IMHO. You now have a "system" of parts designed (and presumably warrantied) to work with each other from the factory as opposed to a third party making it on its own.

Pics are always good!

A factory part does not make it better, many have tried the factory mounts and found them unsatisfactory, which is why they go to a "third" party. I have a Leupold Mark 4 Scope, does that mean that the Leupold bases and rings are better than the Badger Rings and Near Base that the scope is in?

I am still sceptical if the mount will stand up, that being said, I doubt sako would design a mount for the rifle that was not up to the task. It incorperates a recoil lug like the Near mount, so I hope I don't have any issues. I will let you know how it all works when the scope comes in and I can give it a torture test.

the mount will stand up fine. I know numerous people with TRG42s with no problems at all. If you don't mount the scope and base properly, no matter who made the, they will fail.

Well, let me ask you: if your Near mount is defective, could you send you rifle + mount back to Mr.Near and tell him to fix it and make sure it works (by firing it, of course)? What about the Badger rings? Could you send your rifle + mount and tell them to fix it, then test it? And free of charge, in both cases? I'd be suprised if you could, but I could be wrong.

I'm pretty sure that Sako will do this; although I don't have a Sako, my rifle + mount are made by the same company; my mount failed and the repairs, shipping, testing, etc. (basically all costs) were at their expense. Warranty goes a long way - if Near & Badger can offer these levels of guarantees at a better price than the Sako mount, terrific, go with it. Otherwise, it might be time to reconsider.

That being said, this is not a defamation of Badger or Near products, just incentive to step back and look at the greater scheme of things, which is why I emphasized the word "system". Quality & service go hand in hand.

Yes, but warranty work is usually done via a local distributor; I can't speak for Sako directly, but that has been my experience thus far.

I am willing to bet that your local dealer took care of things for you. The Sako distributor in Canada ( Stoeger) is not noted for speedy or easy turn arounds with warranty issues.
