Which Remington 700 would be the best to put into an Accuracy International stock? Meaning I would buy the rifle and discard the stock.

Also, does Remington make a heavy barrel rifle and do you they make any of the rifles for .338 Lapua or would I have to settle for .308/.300WM/.300RUM?

If you're just going to toss the stock go with an SPS. The SPS varmint has a heavy barrel and is available in .308. If you want a bigger cal you'll have to pic a different model, but if you're just getting into precision shooting I would stick with a .308 anyways, .338 lapua isn't a cheap round to shoot. If you really must have a different caliber you will have to look at other models.

Remington put out a police model in .338 lapua, but I don't think they're that common, and from what I've heard the remington action isn't really designed to accomodate the large case of the .338 lapua.

I like the features of that rifle but where is the detachable magazine option? I see Remington makes an SPS with detachable magazine but that model does not have the heavy barrel... Hmmm...

If your looking for a heavy barrel and a detachable mag why not take a look at the Savage line, particular the 10CFP. It comes with both those options and they can also come with a McMillan or HS Precision stock.

I'm not sure which remmy has a detach mag but adding one will cost you about $400 or more from what I've seen.

If you want the AICS like you said in your opening post you're going to get one of the best DM systems on the market today. Just get any heavy barrel Remington 700 and drop the barrel action straight into the AICS. It's a piece of cake. Later you can always get someone to install a match grade barrel for you. No action bedding required with the AICS....at least I haven't found it necessary.

Does the Remington have to have a detachable magazine to properly fit the AICS or will any model 700 work?

As long as it's not a single shot it'll work it can be either a fix or detachable mag either one will work.

Thanks Keeg. I will probably get the SPS-V since it is the same as the 700P minus the stock which I will swap out anyway. Save some money and end up with the same rifle at the end.

I would think of it as more money saved for when your ready to put on a custom barrel when you get bored of that one or burn that one out, but all in all the samething.

Now what are you putting on for glass?

Nightforce. Yes, I plan on burning out the stock heavy barrel before I upgrade to the Shilen, Krieger or Rock Creek barrel on it. It does not have to be a top of the line rifle right away I can take it easy and upgrade it over time.

If you're going to drop $1200 for a stock that fits a $600 rifle, you may as well do it properly and get a proper match-grade barrel. Remember that at the end of the day, your $2000+ rifle is still just a factory rifle where it counts the most.

Unfortunately, I am not the richest person in the world and cannot afford to fork out all those funds in one shot. If I could I would just buy a premade custom rifle for 6 000 bucks.

I guess 12GS, I am stumped at why you would invest all that money into something that will contribute absolutely nothing towards accuracy. An AICS is nice - don't get me wrong - but it is rather like putting Z-rated Parelli's on a Chevy Chevette...

Obtunded called it right.. why not look around for a used Rem 700 ( around $400.00), have the action trued, rebarrel it with a quality match barrel (Kreiger) and you've still got less money in it than if you used an AI stock and a new SPS... a new McMillan A5 with all the ajust features will run you about $700.00 US... this would be a very accurate rig...
