lookin to replace my mossberg plinkster this summer for the upcomming gopher season. cant decide between a ruger or a remington. i like that 10/22 are very modular but ive been hearing that the quality has been declining. any suggestions?

I thought about the same choices. It seems to me that there are more replacement components available to fix the Ruger than the Remington, or to upgrade what isn't really broken to a much higher level. Also, the high capacity rotary mag of the Ruger is another deciding advantage for me. While I still haven't bought either, I've invested in an Evolution stock for a Ruger. So the Ruger should be soon to follow.

10/22 VS Rem 597

Thats a no brainer for me. 10/22 all the way. I have a few of them in various configurations. They are all a ton of fun.

I know guys that have bought 597s and who love them. But its no 10/22

I have never owned a 597 but I have owned three 10/22's that I didn't care for. I bought a Marlin 795 and it put's 10/22's to shame for out of the box accuracy and feeding.

10/22 - works just fine stock, but the aftermarket parts really make it shine. Even the Israeli military used them as a 'less'-lethal alternative for crowd control...

I just picked up 10/22 numbers 4 and 5 this week, and am eying up number 6. I think these are fantastic little rifles and have yet to find one I didn't like. Only modded one with a stock, trigger & barrel, and like shooting them all equally.

I've only fired a 597 once and briefly, but liked it quite a bit. Seemed to handle well and was accurate enough for the shooting we did. I'd consider one if I didn't seem to be trying to collect one of every 10/22 model.

If I were you, if possible I'd try to get a couple of each model to handle and inspect at the least, and shoot too if you can arrange it. Unless you get a lemon I doubt you'll be disappointed with either one, so it'll most likely boil down to what you prefer to handle and shoot.

Not another one of these threads....

Try both on for size and see what you like best. If you want to add a lot of bolt-on parts for customization, a 10/22 is a safe bet. If you want something cheap and accurate right out of the box, no fiddling required, go with the 597.

What will you be using it for?

nary a problem with my 597

Love my 597, it's such a simple rifle and accurate to boot. So far mine has been reliable to a fault, the new mags are great. I think that ultimately though, it's up to how it feels and how much you can afford at the time. I personally think that the stock ruger is ugly as balls anyway:p.
