Ok at first I was think of getting a Norinco M14S for my first rifle. But they are hard to find and are not as accurate as a bolt action. So now Im looking at a Remington 700 SPS DM in 300WM. But I do like M14/M1A's so I have canumdrum what do I get. So can you help me what one is the best for hunting, SHTF, and blowing up watermelons at 800 yards.

What do you mean hard to find? Look at the exchange form on this site, there are ten norinco m14s for sale at any given time. Your right about them not being as accurate though. I'd stick with a bolt gun unless your willing to spend some money and time getting an m14 to shoot, and it still won't be as good.

.300WM for a first rifle? Get yourself a fast twist .223 that will shoot heavy bullets. It may not blow up watermellons at 800 yards but you will be able to hit them if you are up to the task. Stay away from .300WM or any magnums for a first rifle.

If your limited on cash, stay away from the 300 WM.

Although the M1A is not the best precision rifle they can be tuned up and get fairly accurate. You live in the Wack so going to one of Tom's (45APCKING) seminars to tune it would be pretty easy. Now keep in mind, it is a battle rifle and there not light. Mine use to top the scales at 14 lbs after the mount and scope.

Money only got 800$
OK, but you're not going to be blowing up watermelons at 800yds with either. That is a very small target at that distance. You'll need an accurate platform to start with. Maybe a nice Tikka Varmint in 6.5x55 on the EE if you can find it, then a good long range scope, bipod and lots of wind reading practice.
