Dealers/Gunsmiths "Dissipator": Can it be done?

CGn'rs,

As dealers so far have not been able to bring the Bushy Dissipator in for lowly civie shooting, I'm looking at creative solutions...:ninja:

Looking at a 16" rifle that can use standard rifle length handguards. NOT looking at chopping down a full size rifle's barrel as there are reliability problems with the gas system. So it would have to be a middy or carbine length gas system.

What say you all lords and ladies, your input appreciated.:)

Argh, now I feel bad...should have qualified it...I want to share the same set of handguards between my work gun (C7A1) and the target gun, but as I understand it your rails are not freefloat...that said would you be able to build the upper w/o handguards (so has the standard delta ring and FSB) and either carbine or mid-length gas system?

The full length gas system is hit and miss when cycling ammo out of a shortened barrel (I think not enough dwell time). If it was OK, I'd just grab a Bushy rifle and cut it down, but reliability is an issue.

Any thoughts? ATR, in your quest to build the ultimate Cdn AR ,would mid-length gas system, 16" barrel that can use standard rifle length handguards be built?

That's the first I heard of that. Short gas tubes and barrel vents drilled closer to the chamber is usually the cause of poor cycling as far as I know. That is why the AR pistols are not as reliable as the carbine, and the midlength is a bit better and the full length is best.
 
Yep a dissipator carbine can be done.

All you need to do, is get a low profile gas block (or grind down your existing front sight base) and then put the front sight base up front where a 20" FSB would go, then pin and/or clamp it in place. This would allow you to use stock rifle length handguards, and more importantly keep the midlength gas system. That is what Bushmaster does.

The hardest part would be attaching the front sight base and getting it attached, but anybody that does AR work can do this :)

Any idea a)a ballpark figure on how much it would cost and b) reliability/warranty for something like this?

I had actually looked into having a CMMG "dissipator" style upper being brought in, but if it makes sense to do here in Canada I'd go with that.
 
I know I'm going to regret this but FYI the Bushmaster dissipator is factory shiped with a heavy bbl with a standard FSB and a roll pin in the gas tube hole to index the handguard cap and a carbine gass tube with a Varmint / Predator gas block under the handguards, I think you want the old armalite with the midlangth gass tube,but down side is they come with mid lanth hand guards, only way is to order the armalite gas tube and have a custom barrel turned for both the lo pro gas block and the standard FSB. I tryed this before for one of my customers and we could not find a crome bore and chamber bbl blank only a match blank or stainless blank so customer ended up going with the dissipator, Good luck in the quest for what makes you happy.

Not really feasible on an existing barrel. The gas block is .750 diameter, the remaining portion of the barrel is turned down slightly smaller than that. You could still do it but you'd either have to;
-find a lightweight (.625") FSB and ream it out to the actual diameter, or
-sleeve the barrel or shim the FSB and re-install the existing FSB.

Probably not worth the hassle if a new barrel can be made for a reasonable amount.

Full length gas systems are less than optimal due to the proximity of the muzzle to the gas block. They can be made to work but the simpler and more reliable solution would be to use a midlength gas block.

I'll see if our local AR manufacturers can build something like this...if things don't work out I'll have to supplicate myself before the US DOS gods and see about the CMMG.
