Hunting Season for Gopher in South Ontario...

seen the first one the other day and seen one dead on the road. I dont usually hunt them til august to let them breed first. They arent a real problem where I hunt them, I just like to keep a steady population for each year.

Gophers in southern Ontario

I shot all the gophers in southern Ontario so I moved out to Alberta to try to do the same. I do it for the greater good of mankind!:D

Absolutely no gophers down there boy!:D

I've hunted alot in Ont. and the West and there aren't any gophers in Ont., those big things are groundhogs or woodchucks(same thing), you need more gun for them or you'll wound them and they run into their hole to die. Out west there are a few types of gophers, but they are all smaller and out to about 100yds. a .22 will work fine.

I just found this year groundhogs can climb trees & will go up quite high to avoid injury... Learn something new everyday.

There are no Richardson's Ground Squirrels in Ontario.

There's no ground hog hunting season in Ontario, but don't go looking for them between late September and early Spring(depending on the weather). They're a true hibernator and spend the winter deep in the ground.
Around Chatham, you'll have to knock on some farm house doors and ask permission to hunt. Don't go on Sunday and don't have a firearm or be wearing hunting clothes.
"...groundhogs listed in the Ontario regs?..." They're not protected under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1997 (e.g., groundhogs). Hence, no mention of 'em, but a small game licence is still required.
