Question for any P.E.I.-ers out there

I've been living in California for the past nine years and have developed a love for pistol shooting that I would like to continue once I move back up to Ch'town. I don't own any guns yet, but am planning to go through the necessary hoops to purchase one once I move.

So, my question is this, and it's based partly on a hunch given the small-town nature of...well the whole province :D :

Are there any PEI-specific regulations I should know about concerning the possession, storage, and transport of pistols (specifically those in the 'restricted' class - I would likely be picking up a .45 caliber Sig Sauer if I could. Those guns and I were made for each other.). I would certainly not be applying for any kind of concealed carry license (if that's even an option for civilians up there) - just a comfy handgun that I love to shoot at the range and would store appropriately at home.

I recently moved from PEI to NS so I can relate my experiences. No "PEI Specific" regulations. You are governed by Federal Regs. You're correct, concealed carry is not an option.
To transport your SIG you would need a Restricted Possession/Acquisition License(RPAL) and an Authorization To Transport(ATT). To get an ATT you need to be a member of a range. There are very few of them on PEI. When I moved away there was one in Kings County(Caledonia) and one in Prince County(Miscouche). The one is Miscouche is semi-private.
I will be honest with you, there are lots of good decent "gun folks" on PEI but the facilities were poor, but perhaps thing's have changed since I left a year ago. The last I heard the only gun shop closed down as well but again, someone may have opened one up that i'm not aware of.

Owning a restricted on PEI isn't much fun. Leo in Savage Harbour closed shop, his shop wasn't great but it was something. Now? No Pistol ammo on PEI for sale that I can find.

Your looking at a hour(roughly) drive from Charlottetown to the outdoor range in Caledonia, I personally never been as shooting non-restricteds at my friend's place is easier. The good thing about Caledonia is the membership is like 40 bucks for the year.

Why are you moving to PEI?

Going Fishing, they are about to start carrying non restricted firearms this month and will be carrying pistol ammo.

Funny comment coming from a guy from Ontario, while we do not have any province specific regulations, Ontario is chock full of weird provincial policies.

You may want to look into the police school range as well, they may have a private club or some public hours where you can use their range.
 
No can do on the police range (Slemon Park, police academy range I assume). They can't let anyone outside of the school use it.
I asked them about it and they said "insurance". Could have been a polite way to say f*#k off.
It may as well not exist for the rest of us.
 
There is nothing worth while for shooting on the island except of course waterfowl and coyotes.

Every time I visit I am filled with reasons why I left. The socialist whiner attitude is so thick there it makes me gag. They are so socialist they don't see an other way. And most don't know what socialism is.

The gov't has it nose so far into everyone's business that if you fart you'll get a letter from the premier.

While I do kinda like it here and have never had the balls to leave. I do agree with you. lotsa whiners, lotsa sense of entitlement but also a lot of sense of community etc. As a whole Islander tend to feel as though we are way more important than we really are, most don't realize how insignificant we are.

If there's enough of a shooting community on PEI to warrant it it may be an opportunity for you to approach them and create a club, with your own insurance etc. It may not exist now but such clubs have deals with a great number of provincial, municipal and even DND ranges across the country.

Just an idea that may be worth looking into.
 
Slemon Park wants nothing to do with outside shooters. On top of insurance, they'd have security issues with people in the buildings after hours. I got to shoot their once - damn nice range.
I didn't even know Leo closed - goes to show how long it's been since I made the trip down.
There was a group of us a couple years back contemplating setting up a range closer to Charlottetown - land was the major issue. So if you know anyone with isolated land near town.....

But not too close to town...
 
There would be some issue raised about lead contamination if you ever wanted to open a new facility. There would be a town hall and nothing would ever materialize. Typical PEI

That's why location is important - pick the right location, no "town hall" needed.
 
I live across the highway from Slemon Park ( the old air base) and when the military was there,they had their own indoor and outdoor range. The outdoor range is used by the police school for rifle and shotgun practice, but I'm pretty sure the old indoor military range building is sitting there empty.It might be an idea to explore getting use of this old range if it still in usable condition.

They had a flyer stapled up at the Caledonia range.
