Norinco 1911 Tinkering

Hi everyone,

I just bought, and received, a Norinco M-1911A1 'Sport Model' (Two-Tone) .45 ACP. (Great sale btw. Had the pistol in a week)

This is not my first 1911. I also have a Kimber Stainless Target II™ / .45 ACP. To be honest I did not want to toy around with the Kimber as these are my first handguns and I did not want to screw up a fairly expensive, and nice looking, gun.

So I bought the Norinco with the idea of doing some modifications to it. I can live with giving it a few idiot scratches. I was hoping someone here has done something similar and could give me some pointers. I am not in a major city center and would like to order the mods and do the work myself.

Any suggestions? If so feel free to link me to the actual parts you are talking about.

Thanks all!

Norc 1911A1's..............

I bought the all blued version. Strikes me is it probably is "good to go" right outta the box. But that kinda defeats the purpose of 'personalizing' it, right. ;)

So, on mine I ditched the extended slide stop for a standard one. And the big mag release button for a standard one. Grips are now double diamond hard wood. I still have yet to install a McCormick adjustable trigger [will try the standard/stock one for awhile to see how that works out].

Not too crazy about the as issue full length guide rod. Plan to replace it with either a standard two piece FLGR or go back to stock GI with the short recoil spring guide and plug set-up.

Other than that I don't feel the need or desire to do much more with it at this point except shoot it [lots].

NAA.

I'm still waiting on mine but when I do get it I'll be putting on some rubber hogue grips with the finger grooves, changing the mag release button to a normal size, change the extended slide stop with a stainless one and I'll be changing the mainspring housing with a S&A 20LPI checkered arched mainspring housing with integrated magwell. I'll post pics when I actually get it!

Me too.

I managed to get one of the last GI spec units. I swapped out the thumb safety for a new GI spec unit and installed walnut double diamond grips. It looks really nice except for the "made in china" on the side.

I guess the main things I am looking at changing out are the Thumb Safety (it is ambi and I am righty), the Guide Rod and Spring (How many pounds?) and maybe the trigger. (Grips too but that is a no brainer)

the standard 1911 spring is 16 lbs, move up to a 18 or 18.5 is a good staring point, if you can get one, get a bromwells low mount thumb safety, , great fro resting thumb on for shoting, hand is out of the way of the slide, and a better grip.

disassemble, clean it, smooth & polish the trigger & sear, dehorn especially the safety, bevel mag well slightly, adjust grip safety spring & lighten trigger spring, polish feed ramp, install houge finger grips, total cost $29. Shoots like a champ!

Oh - I have way more planned for mine than that:evil: I regard them as an excellent base for a custom gun. The steel used is supposedly some of the best steel used in any 1911...

Sorry for crappy picture. My good camera is on loan.

I wanted to give this foo-man-chu 1911 a little class.

Checkered slide stop, USGI style thumb safety, Walnut double diamonds

Thanks for the pic Pocketfisherman. I will get a shot up of mine hopefully tonight.

By the way where do you purchase the parts you are mentioning? I am finding many part sellers want to send to the US only and there is not a lot of choices in the Great White North.

My point was to do it all for very little $, I actually had the houges in stock already. Lots of upgrades no $, excellent shooter.

Here is mine,Hogue grips, Flat MSH, Standard slide catch and mag release, wolf springs, polished trigger and sear. Then Duracoated frame OD green and slide tactical black. I want to replace the sights next but don't know which brand to go with.

Looks great - did you use the dura bake or coat? Also - how did you cover the Norinco logo?:D

Good luck finding sights - I'm on the hunt right now - the retailers for night sights are slim in Canada. I Like the Extreme Duty Novaks best - but will have to get them from the U.S.

I am getting mine from friends in the US and having them shipped up here.

Stay tuned though I am working with a local gunsmith and some friends in the manufacturing business to start turning out replacement parts and grips for the 1911.

Cheers,

Sorry about stealing the post like this, but, undergiver, where do you get duracoat in Canada? Ontario if possible?
