So I'm familiar with the mag capacity for hunting (5 rds), my question is, say in the case of a bolt action repeater that has a magazine capacity of 10rds, (ie) the Lee Enfield, does the mag need to be pinned to 5rds?

For example if you were hunting with an AI, could you use the 10rd mag?
( I know they make a 5rd'er) humor me

This is for Ontario, BTW.

Only restrictions are on semi-auto's and handguns there are no restricitons on mag capacity for manually operated actions.

I'll stay with 4 rds in the mag and one in the chamber with center fire rifles to stay on the legal side of things. Far as I know, that's legal for Ontario.

For shooting at one animal with 5rds, and not hit, is time to take a breather and understand ones limitations.;)

On the other hand, I'll never understand the 3 shot limit for shotguns?

Mope, No restrictions for manually operated centerfires-I fill the 10 round magazine in my Lee-Enfield, even thouggh I just use one shot- Its easier that carrying extras in my pockets.

People are mixing up the firearms act limitations on firearms capacity with restrictions for hunting via the various provincial hunting acts. Unless specifically noted in your provinces hunting regs, there is no magazine restriction for a bolt, pump or lever action firearm. You are restricted by the firearms act to 5 rounds for a semi auto. Your restricted in most provinces on the amount of shotgun shells allowed in a shotgun for waterfowl hunting. It has nothing to do with the firearms act. YOu need to specifically research the hunting regs for your province.

In Alberta, you have no mag restrictions in the hunting regs for bolt action center fires....

No, (ie: Lee Enfield) Bolt action repeaters, pumps or lever action are not restricted to 5 rds. You are allowed to load to the capacity of the magazine.
Only centre fire Semi's are restricted to 5 rd. mags.

At the risk of looking stupid, what is an AI?

Nailed it nicely.
With the exception of the semi auto Garand, it gets special mention in the federal regs, and is a semi auto, allowed to have eight round capacity.

"...never understand the 3 shot limit for shotguns..." Migratory Bird Act. Our name for an International Treaty between Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. The theory being that if you can't hit the bird with three shots, you won't with 4 either. A missed bird will be out of lethal range by th etime you've fired 4 shots anyway. Even with a semi-auto.
Ontario does say 3 rounds in the shotgun for any hunting.
Only the Lee-Enfield and M1 Rifle are specifically exempt from the silly mag capacity rule. Any mag for any other centrefire rifle, larger than 5 rounds, is a prohibited device.

Disagree with that, I say load as many rounds as is legal. If your centre fire rifle is not semi-auto, there is no 5 round restriction.

I agree with you about shooting at one animal with five shots, but what about shooting at 10 animals with 10 shots. If you go hunting in the prairies, you might end up taking 100 rounds or more with you, reloading gets kind of annoying.

Wait till stublejumper reads that one, Ha Ha..:D

Ever had this scenario happen?..
You're in a duck blind, empty you're shotgun on some geese decoying, bang bang bang, gun is empty then ducks are on top of you and guess what? The better meals flie away.

I am pretty sure that I could take my Remington 7615 a field for coyotes loaded with a 10 round RRA magazine and not be in violation of any Ontario hunting regulation that I am aware of.

Chizzy

Before I die I wonder if they'll ever lift the 3 shotgun shell limit in Ontario during big game season.

It always seemed weird that you could have an unlimited magazine in .460, .458, .375, etc. etc... but you can't have more than three slugs in your shotgun.:(
