sako 85 stainless laminate

That would make a very sweet hunting rig. My only real beef with the 75 series was the weight, the edge stock would help with that, if I was rebarreling it would be the contour my 300 winny was in the Sako AV series, I would guess standard contour.

My .308 75 Finnlight is at 7lbs scoped now, with the EDGE, including optilocks...

I have only seen the ringmounts on the Sako site. When I find a rifle,I will look for some .One of my local Sako dealers is very good at obtaining guns and parts that aren't easy to find.He sold me a very nice Browning European Gold 20 gauge last year that I can't even find online.

I got the new Sako ringmounts on my Sako m75 Greywolf 338-06AI:D that was completed at end of October 2008.

Pretty sweet setup.

I'm trying to figure out if the optilock ringmounts are going to be low enough for me before I go to the trouble of special ordering a pair. What scope do you have on your Sako and how much clearance is there between the objective and barrel?

Thanks,
Dave

I have 3 rifles in my truck and used calipers to measure between the bottom of the bell @ taper pt. on OBJ lense to thetop of barrels.

I have a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40 mounted in the Sako ringmounts just under 2mm on my Sako m75 Greywolf 338-06AI

Leupold VX2 4-12x40 mounted in Sako Optilock low rings & bases = 4.00mm on my Sako m75ss 243

Leupold Vari-X III 6.5-20x40 in Optilock low rings & bases = 4.00mm on my Sako m75ss 22-250

My guess the same on my 300WM with Leupold VariX III 3.5-10x40 and Tikka T3 LS rifles with Optilock low rings and bases with 40mm VX3's scopes

I load for and play with an 85 Laminate on occasion (Belongs to my hunting partner). I cant' find anything wrong with it. Shoots MOA all day long at normal hunting distances. Its piled up plenty of Barrens Land Caribou and Deer in the last couple years since owning it so its hard to argue with success, It all depends what you are looking for in hunting rifle.

Thanks for your quick and precise reply!

Wookie - the Conetrols are the other option I was considering. Looks like I could save a few bucks with your set. My understanding is that you just bang the mounts onto the dovetails with a dowel. Are the dovetails left messed up at all if you ever take them off? Also, does the front mount fit flush with the back of the bridge or does it overhang the port. I've seen some that overhang and for some reason that bothers me.

I have my VXIII 2.5-8x36mm in Extra-Low rings and bases on My Sako 75, and I bet you could put a 40mm in those rings too...The Low ringmounts would probably be the same height as the x-low base combo...

I have my 6x42 in extra lows and fits good. I also have the Leupold flip up caps on it.

On a long action they will fit flush! You have to use a soft drift to drive them on. They will come off no problem without marking them up as long as you use a soft drift and the dovetail will be fine after they are removed. If interested PM me and I will send a picture I have with the scope mounted on a M995 Sako TRG-S and a picture of the mounts themselves! Thay are strong & much lighter than Optilocks, and they won't mark the scope up. Also you do not have to worry about stripping out the cone screws as they are a decent size.

How much clearance does that give you at the closest point? The lower ringmount is 1.5mm lower than the extra low mounts and bases. The scope that I have in mind is virtually identical in dimensions to yours.

It that at the very end of the objective?I always mount Butler Creek flip ups on my hunting rifles.

No its measured from where the bell opens up to its widest point before becoming a cylinder again-theclosest point from the scope to the barrel. I use the Leupold Alumina Flip-up covers on my rifles but Butler Creek ones should fit.

Here is a link to pics of my 338-06AI posted in CGN and you will see. Hope it helps.

One of the problem you may have Clayton is the Swaro scopes you like have large eye pieces. I had a problem with Zeiss Conquest scopes and optiloks. The base was too high for me to mount the scope far enough forward for my liking.

I may get away with the ringmount, with the 42mm scope, but it will be very close.

Actually looking at the ringmounts on MightyPeace's rifle, that may be an issue. The ring sits further back on the receiver with the ringmount.I may have to go with the separate rings and bases.
Here is a picture of the swarovski with the separate rings and bases. And I can always chamfer the rear base a bit to allow the scope to slide ahead more.

I am going to have to find a store with the rifle, scope and rings in stock to do a fit up before buying the mounts.

Thanks guys, you may have helped me avert a mounting issue.

I resolved my problem with Burris signature rings and Sako bases. The base is sloped.

Here is another option, would be no big deal to AI it.

I have a mcmillan stock that would fit it in my basement.

Except I much prefer a stainless barreled action, and I am not that fond of the av action.I had a limited edition Sako av silvertip in 375 h&h many years ago,and I just couldn't warm up to the gun even after installing a mcmillan hunter stock.

I will look at the burris rings and bases though.
