4 Gauge

I can remember cheap trade guns in 4 ga. being sold quite some time ago.
Probably necessary to make one.
Better check your hunting regulations, 4 ga. may not be permitted for any hunting.
 
I'm in ON. Have an 8 ga. ml double. No go for waterfowl, of course. Spring turkey allows 10 through 20 ga.
 
We don't have any turkeys, and crows and coyotes are considered pests. Mostly I guess I just want to experience an aspect of a bygone era. An 8 gauge double might even be better.
 
4 ga. is about 1.00" bore. Checked to see if there was any 1.00" ID CrMo tubing. Best I could find is only 1 3/8" OD. Don't know if I would be happy with 3/16" thick walls at the breech, less the threading depth of the breechplug. 1 5/8" tapered to 1 3/16" at the muzzle would make a decent barrel, I think. Might be a bit on the heavy side for wingshooting, though.
 
I have a 5 guage that I shoot occasionally; would suggest that you would find a 8 guage or even 6 guage far more comfortable to shoot as well as a lot lighter. My 5 guage weighs roughly 14 lbs and shoots a 3 oz round ball. The 8 guage original load was 1 7/8 oz of shot and a single fowler runs I would think about 8 or 9 lbs and has I would guess about 1/2 the recoil or less relative to the 5 guage

My smokeless 10 gauge O/U weighs 9.6 pounds and is a pussy-cat with 1 3/4 steel loads. Doubling that might be too much of a good time, but 8 gauge recoil and weight sounds do-able.
 
Gun mart in Brockville Ontario has a 4-bore muzzleloader, using newspaper wadding and an ounce of shot it apparently throws perfect patterns at 40 yards. Brian said that it looks like a snow storm every time you fire it though.
 
Check out ww.thegunworks, under custom rifles, they have 4 bore and an 8 bore , English sporting rifle style.
If that don't make you flinch nothing will :eek:

Not particularly good photos. The long gun is a 6 guage fowler and the short one is the 5 guage smooth rifle with sights and a double set trigger.

There is a new made 4 guage single barreled muzzle loader at Gun Mart in Brockville, On. (613-342-4037). Brian Dwyre runs the shop. He has had it for a few years. It was made, according to what I remember, by an older gunsmith. It is large...large...large and well made. It's the only one I have ever seen in person. Dave

Hearing Brian talk about that 4-bore you can tell he really likes it.
