I am working on a new chassis for the HS50 rifle. I would love to post it but my posts usually get deleted????????????? I need to know if I post it will it get deleted??
Here is a quick description. I have kept the barrel and bolt, trigger assembly (with modifications of course), grip/guard assembly and scope mount. I have made the main frame one piece with an angled fore grip allowing slide aiming off of a post, log, backpack, ECT... or with use on the bipod. A one piece bolt tube complete with (hopefully) a side set 5 round mag (opposite from the current eject window) and scope mount which will bolt to the barrel and bolt tube making the barrel more ridged to the bolt tube and frame. There will also be a heat shield above the barrel mostly for looks but it might keep the heat rays away from the scope picture. Oh yeah, there will also be an adjustable cheek rest (if needed) and adjustable shoulder pad. Lastly and of course an ALBERTA TACTICAL RIFLE brake only because a windshield did not fit on my modifications (had no room for the wipers).
I want to post the proposal so I may get feedback on the design in order to achieve the correct modifications the first time. Do it once and do it right.
Oh and for those of you who wonder why? And why an HS 50?
Lets just say: because, I have some time on my hands, I can, why not, its mine and the HS needs it!

Please comment, I need constructive feedback on the design.

I like your plans, it's very interesting. I applaud your enthusiasm, however a statement such as, "the HS needs it" is something I'd have to disagree with. For the money, the HS50 is well built and worth what you pay for. Good luck though and if you get one off the ground I'd love to see some pics. Take er' easy
 
I don't know if I like the up angled forestock, A flat forestock would be more versatile, and allow the addition of a rail if desired for rail mounted bipodes?

your design would make adding a conventional bipod not possible.

I see you have a mount at the forward end but you are limiting the customer on what they can do with it.

True on the conventional bipod but a rail can be added to this design also. The original came with a bipod so I thought why add a provision for a second one. I was trying to reduce the weight of the changes as much as possible. I have had success with the angled stock in the past and so stuck with the idea. Thanks for your thoughts and will keep in mind for gen 2.

I agree this rifle is nose heavy in its original design so I choose to shoot prone. I was chatting with my draftsmen and we have came up with the C of G for this rifle and noticed that it was just ahead of the scope mount which is just pass the barrel mounting block towards the brake. I hope it will work well. My fave is the mag that this will accept. Is there a rule against a 5 round fifty mags??

Exactly my point! Original and no one will have the same unless I mass produce as an upgrade? Hmmmm? only if it works!

The Nemesis rifles and the AW50s both use a 5 shot mag.
Having good access to AMSD mags for the Nemesis may be a reason to use them, the AW50 mags are spendy and hard come by.
 
I have the same bipod, it is horrible and wobbly.

I don't mind the mounting system if there are bipods available that don't wobble as much as a versapod.

that is why I bought my atlas bipod and ditched the versapod, what a great decision.

I will never ever ever buy another versapod again
 
Finally it's almost complete

As you can see from the pictures it matches the drawings with some slight changes. I've added a shoulder pad and extension so now I'm very happy with my length of pull. I changed the muzzle brake to a design of ATR and provided by them. Actually, a big thank you to the boys at ATR for their assistance on machining some of the components such as the bolt tube, shoulder pad mount and spacer, 30 MOA scope mount, some touch ups on the chassis and their friends who did the mill spec TYPEIII anodizing.

Just got it back today and I will need to complete the barrel shroud and thinking of putting a quick disconnect fore grip which will allow me to have a wider base should I need it to prop the rifle on anything else but the bipod. I will also have to fab up a cheek weld plate with pad which would be adjustable and locked in once I set my line of sight. I am very happy with the way it turned out. Now I just need good weather to take her for a spin. This design did make the rifle 4.2 pounds heavier than the original which I am very happy with. Most of the weight gain is from the steel muzzle brake, stainless steel scope mount, shoulder pad adaptor and spacer plus a little bit on the chassis and bolt tube. As soon as ATR brings in a 50BMG magazine, we are going to adapt on to this bolt tube as a side mount fed mag system. Can't wait for this change.

The benefits of this design are a one piece chassis, heavier bolt tube which allows me to now have the barrel locked in to the bolt tube via the scope mount and it's 2 factory bolts that tie into the chassis, plus this is a rigid type set up meaning the bolt tube has tighter tolerances where it actually goes into the chambering portion of the barrel. I will try this muzzle brake out because from what I'm told by ATR is that I should expect no more muzzle blast slamming me in the face and kicking up whatever debris is around the end of the barrel, plus way lighter recoil.

I’m having a friend of mine working on a electronic type trigger assembly for this rifle. We are very close with the trigger design which will allow us to fire the rifle with both electronic assist which will give us about 1 to a 3 second delay from when the trigger is pulled to when it actually fires, which will be completely settable based on shooting comfort and should it be needed, let’s say due to battery failure, manual over ride. Now I know some of you guys are saying in your heads WTF would I need that for and my reply is, due to the poor economy and the lack of things to do, why not? I don’t think it’s ever been done before. Idle hands cause trouble in most cases but having idle hands and mental stress due to the fact of lack of work, sometimes creates good things. I will post more detailed pictures as I progress to its completion and will post them when I have time.

Does anyone know who makes high quality low profile scope rings? Just so I can bring my scope down to sit a little lower.

As I said, I'm very happy with this design, it is now a very unique rifle and a 'one of'. Let me know your comments. I will post my results after firing it some good distances and I will update with more detailed pictures.
Is anyone interested in my original chassis parts, original muzzle brake and the 2 rifle cases it came with? These will be going up for sale here in the near future.

Congrats on your new project rifle. Looks great. Time very well spent.

I can certainly help you with the rings. What is the present distance from the notch in the base (the corner of the pic rail) to the center of the ring (bottom ring flat)?

If I may suggest, you would want a trigger time in miliseconds not seconds. Having a 3sec wait before ignition would be several times worse then a flintlock.

Electronic triggers have been around since the 70's. They do work very well and have been banned in all competition sports as a result. Rem went with both electronic trigger AND ignition a while back. Didn't fare too well but the tech was very interesting.

Tell us how this rig shoots for you.

I have full timing ability to 15 minutes and as low as half Milliseconds. I will play with the trigger when ready. Thank you for the timing suggestion. Do you know where I may be able to read up on the past electronic triggers? Very interested.
 
for your rings, now that you have done all that work to the body of it, why dont you get a onepiece base/ring combo milled up for it? You could get any MOA cant that you wanted along with the height. Youd be surprised at what a CNC can do these days.
 
Knockturnal - Thank you for your reply. I currently have a one piece base/ring combo for the rifle that was built for the original chassis. I had it made because of the height of the original pic-rail to cheek rest and for providing me with 30MOA because the original pic-rail had zero. I did have ATR provide me with a custom machined 30MOA rail for it now but combined with my machined rings I now have 60MOA and if reversed I have 0MOA.

I do not have my calipers here at home with me to provide Mysticplayer a measurement that he asked for. I will know tomorrow. You have read my mind as far as milling a new custom scope mount for it. I just asked the question in case of one already available (either commercial or custom type).
