precussion cap probs

they're probematical at best- i've tried cci, remmy, and a bunch of others over the years and come to the conclusion that they're like 22 lr- even within the same can, you'll get some duds, but not all - freshness doesn't seem to matter either- all you can do is make sure the cap fits tightly on the nipple, and keep the nipple clean- i crimp mine on with needle nose pliers
My dad and I "worked" on a couple of muzzle loaders that wouldn't fire. It wasn't hard to figure out that the nipple assemblies were clogged. The old man had some small round files (I believe they are for cleaning carbs). Cleaned them out that way. Everything worked the next shot. I have never had a cap fail to fire.
There's a good chance that if they came as a set on a sort of holder that they are welding torch tip cleaning reamers.
Even if they aren't I'd suggest hitting up a welding supply store and get a set of torch tip cleaners. They should work well for cleaning the ports on the nipples.
That's what they are. For some reason I was thinking carbs but I think that was because we were talking about jetting while we were doing it. They work great.
Do the caps fit the nipple properly? They should fit smoothly, and bottom properly. If the caps don't fit all the way onto the nipple, the blow is cushioned. Does the hammer nose make good even contact when it strikes the nipple? If the hammer face is at an angle to the top of the nipple, misfires can result. Is the hammer blow a sharp, hard snap? The hammer has a good swing?

make sure the hammer is striking close to evenly over the entire top of the cap.
sometimes the nipple sticks out to far and its only hitting on a small section on the top.
fixing requires ether lowing the nipple into the gun more. or bending the hammer to that it connects properly or a combination of both.

the guns are an assortment of PROHIB muzzleloaders i picked up in a deal recently. Ive done lots of shooting but Im a BP newbie. Some work better than others but its common to have to snap it 2 or 3 times on most. Im using cci 10s & 11s. Im thinking the top of the nipples seem to be a bit tapered & arent getting full contact. I was thinking of flattening the tops for more contact, & the springs are a little weak in some, any tricks to tension them more? thanks for your help!
