Well I'm taking the long weekend to go outland and do some hunting in an area far away from home that I haven't been to before ... myself and 3 other friends ... we're mainly going to look for wolves and wolverine ... of course we'll shoot some caribou at the same time. I'll be bringing my .223 SigArms rifle for my main go to gun. What would you suggest for a second one to bring? I have a few 308's, a few 30-06's, could get my hands on a 243 from a friend. I didn't get a muskox tag this year so I'm pissed ... but excited to go try my luck on wolves and wolverine ... cross your fingers for me my fellow CGNer's. Cheers,

Otokiak ... :D

p.s. sure to post pics after the weekend ... ;)

Geez! You use a gun on wolverines? Hell, we used to just catch them by hand when I was a kid. Where's your sense of sportsmanship?:D Damn kids nowadays just waste ammo on everything.

Putting two live ones in the same sack can be a bit challenging though....

I got 1 wolf and 1 wolverine this winter. Within 20 minutes of each other. Got them in now for hide(wolf) and full mount (wolverine). I'd take the .243 if I was you. Lot smaller hole in the hide, and lets face it, these are taken for the hides pretty much, so a hide with smaller holes is more valuable in my opinion. Good luck Otokiak.

If you shoot as good as you threw darts on Wednesday night you should have no problems with the critters. I'm heading out to the cabin for some hunting and fishing this weekend to. Good luck JT.

LOL thanks for the words from you all ... and yeah Peter if I can shoot straight like my darts the other night ... I'll be catching quite a few animals this weekend ... :D ... just filled up the sled ... got 8 jerry cans of gas, case of oil, some naptha ... now to go get grub and pack up my qamutiq ... off early in the morning ... I'm excited as I've never been to Barber Bay ... apparently always lots of wildlife ... sweet ... :D

p.s. will definetly post pics ... :D

p.p.s. my ROCHELLE is coming along ... ;) ... Springfield M1A .308 ... YEAH BABY!

Most any centerfire works great with a headshot. Thats all I take, as I rarely take a shot at caribou beyond 75 yards. I haven't had much experience with spooked caribou, so for a couple I probably could have walked up and stabbed them with a bayonette.
Anyhow, the last .308 that I shot a caribou with, left a nice big (huge) exit hole, with a comical spray of blood about 20 feet beyond him. I am only suggesting the .243 from my own personal experience. At 300-600 yards, for sure the .308 is the best suggestion. They certainly aren't hard to kill. I have harvested about 26 in the last 10 years, and NOT 1 put up any kind of fight. Most just stood there for a second or two, then dropped dead. Last 10 were headshots with either 25-06 or .243 and it was instant death. I felt good about the clean kills.

Well I'm having a hard time typeing here so hopefully i don't make too many spelling mistkes ... here we go ...

5 guys, 5 snowmobiles, 5 qamutiqs(sleds), 1 long ride to the area ... 1 blown motor on a polaris, 1 broken diamond drive on an arctic cat, 1 broken pullcord assembly on a skidoo ... no wolves ... no wolverine ... a dozen or so tuku(caribou) ... 1 finger slashed to the bone(me :D) ... 5 guys, 3 snowmobiles, 3 qamutiqs, a dozen or so tuktu and 1 long ride home ... no pics, 5 tired guys ... fun time fun times ... now to go back out next weekend and pick up 1 polaris/qamutiq ... and 1 arctic cat/qamutiq ... maybe just maybe this time see and shoot some wolves and wolverine ... :D ;)

I thought you were an Inuk? You still have to get a tag? Or is it controlled through the HTA? I don't know the NU rules.

BUM, I am 1/2 inuk yes ... and tags yes ... the local HTO and gov't has changed our boundary lines ... so now instead of going 1/2 way across the territory by snowmobile to get one ... I could've gone 1 to 2 hour drive to get one ... and nobody used to sign up as the boundary was too far ... over 50 people ... only 14 tags ... they do a lottery ... I didn't get picked ... :(
