Mystery Rifle found in Montana

Reminds me of the story of the Civil War sword that was used to cut watermelons, on the Antiques Roadshow.

But<shrug> whatever.

Cool. I wonder if it is still loaded?

We had some local yahoos once have an old muzzle loader go off in their garage. They were heating the nipple trying to free the threads and the gun (loaded) went off!
 
I have a 28 guage percussion shotgun (single barrel) marked "HBC", dated 1818, that was found hung by the trigger guard from a snag on an old spruce tree beside the Peace River. Yes, it was loaded. The only damage is that the HBC escutcheon is missing from the bottom of the butt stock, the ram rod is missing, and it's a bit squirrel chewed. I even used to shoot it when I was a kid, before I knew better!

Someone et the Heffley Creek shoot, bought an original musket there, unbreeched it by heating the breech in his campfire ?, and found it was still loaded :eek:
The powder was grey coloured , and newspaper for wadding.

i got a old bp i think 58 or 50 cal rifle off this site last year. owner told me it had a good bore. got it off him , first thing i did when i got home was clean the bore. and i seen that my cleaning rod was not going down all the way. yup it was still loaded.

Wouldn't it be cool if the newspaper had a legible date on it?
 
Did rifled muskets imported to America during that period have barrel bands retained by springs??

I always thought that was a nepal enfield thing!

Its a cool article though!!
