Trap guns tend to be longer, people usually shoot 30 or even 32 inch barrels in a dedicated trap gun. Skeet guns are much smaller, most people prefer a shorter 24 or 26 inch barrel for a dedicated skeet gun. The reason is because the longer barrel allows for a better sighting plane while the shorter barrel is easier to manoeuvre.

The reason I say dedicated is because those are the typical choices for people who shoot one or the other. You will probably want to shoot both sports with the same gun and thus should pick a barrel size which falls in the middle, handle a 28 and see how it feels to you.

There are lots of cheap O/U's but your best bet is buying a used Browning or Beretta instead of a cheaper Yildiz/Baikal/TOZ/Stoeger etc.

That is not the case for Skeet guns any more (if it ever was). Most people are looking for 28-32" bbls for skeet guns (assuming O/Us). There are some 26"s out there still, but you'd have a hard time finding one new.

Try a 1100 remington with a 26 1/2 inch skeet barrel and a 30 inch full choke for trap. They are priced great in the used market ($500) and are soft recoiling. I've shot a lot of competitive trap, skeet and sporting clays and have both O/U's and auto's and know many fellow shooters including an olympic skeet shooter that compete with 1100's and swear by them for pointability and reliability.
