Can anyone recommend a good turkey choke?

I have an 870 express 3" and I am currently using a Remington turkey choke. It kicks like a mule. Is there a choke such as a ported type that will fit my 870? I am old and I am afraid of breaking.

How about a better recoil pad or body mounted shoulder shooting pad. The sell them at various firearm stores for not all that much money. :)

Just my comment since I can't offer a good opinion on ported chokes.

Undertaker makes a ported extended turkey choke. I saw several flavours Yesterday in Bass Pro Shop in Calgary. Maybe give them a call and see what models they have threaded for the Rem Choke system. There was a whole wall devoted to them. :)

I have the undertaker ported turkey choke for my 870. Patterns good, and sure it kicks pretty good when target practising. Havnt felt it yet shooting at a turkey. Barely even hear it as a matter of fact.

get a limbsaver recoil pad. Even the slip on ones are good, they add a bit of length to your gun but they really do help with recoil.

Your all correct about 2 3/4" shells. They do kill turkeys dead. The advantage of 3" shells is the shot payload. More pellets = better chance of hitting the turkey @ longer distances. Some shotguns chambered for 3.5 in shells actually pattern better with 3" or even 2 3/4" shells. If you are having difficulties with recoil, I second the motion to go with 2 3/4" shells. IMHO a ported choke will not significantly reduce the recoil of 3" turkey loads. Good luck with your hunt.

The question was, "Can anybody recommend a good turkey choke."
I would think you may have to use both hands, and squeeze real hard! Those birds are big and tough.

Just to prove a point, buddy at work took to the bush with no camo ... but muted earth tone "normal" clothes, his 1904 Parker SxS 16 ga. bird gun and some 50's vintage
CIL 2-3/4" paper # 5 duckloads his father had hoarded away.

Opening day result: dead gobbler / following day, different spot: dead gobbler, both at about 35 yards.

If you keep your shots at 40 yards or under, Remington's standard Full choke will work just fine, and the Modified choke that came in your 870 Exp. is more than adequate at 30-35 yards. From the past 3 weigh station check points around here ( now discontinued) about 40 percent of the birds were taken opening day and the balanced trailed off more rapidly as the season progressed. Over 50 percent of the successful shooters chose size 4's.

Don't need all the special tricks ... but you do need to sit still and be able to put your pattern on the bird.

I believe it, a lot of people want to spend ridiculous amounts of money on all sorts of #### to hunt, IMO, its all about location and scouting.

my advice would be to find a good gun/choke/shell combination that gives you the best pattern you can get.. then once you have that.. then deal with the recoil issues.. Eg. use the 2 2/4 (and matching choke etc).. vs 3" and matching choke etc.

if that is not enough, then look at padded stocks, jacket pad etc.. don't sacrifice a good choke for a "ported one" Which may have crappier patterning..

I've tried chokes that everyone was raving about, and it was worse then the remington modified choke my gun came with.. find the right combo first, then find out how to reduce recoil.
