I see Tradeex has 6.5 barrels for 96 Mausers, chambered, threaded etc. I've been reading my refrence material and believe these barrels would fit any small ring Mauser including a 21H Brno (albeit the threads need to be shortened). Has anyone taken this route, just looking for confirmation that it can be done before I purchase a barrel? Thank you for any imput. --- John 303.

I once had a new M38 Swede barrel fitted to a Turkish model 98 action. The Turk '98 action is a large ring but uses the smaller threaded barrel shank and this makes for quite a strong action. Everything was bedded in a stiff composite stock and made for a pretty good, rough use rifle. I left the "steps" in the M38 barrel and although a bit muzzle heavy it shot really well. The biggest problem is finding a Turkish action that isn't completely worn/rusted out.

I was pretty sure it could be done, thank you all. The truth is I purchased a partial 21H action (no bolt), one of the reasons was to keep me from messing with my original 21 in 7x57. 21s are are very nice handy rifle, I've never regretted purchasing mine. It may take awhile but I'll get all the pieces together and make a "custom" 21 if not for me I'll do it for one of the grand kids. --- John 303.

A little machining of the barrel collar and usuall head space adjustment was all it took. I found the M38 barrel shot really well.
A fellow member pm'ed me (after I made the above post) advising he had a couple VG condition Turks for sale at a reasonable price. Perhaps if you indicate an interest, he would pm you his info.

I hesitated on the missing bolt too but not for long, I'm certain a 98 Mauser bolt will fit of which I have one or two. As far as the M38 barrels I would think they are quite good and accurate simply because I believe the M38 is the Swedish M96 "target model". --- John 303.
I have put many M96 barrels on 1903 Turkish mauser actions. It's a pretty simple alteration. The M38 is not necessarily a target barreled M96, it generally refers to the carbine. M96, full-length take-offs are really good for hunting guns because they are throated and rifled for the 159 grain military load , whereas the newer style and the Ljungman barrels have a twist to stabilize the later 139 grain loading. I liked taking the long 96 barrel down to 24 or 26 inches for optimum performance. M-42 B barrels can be had and have their uses also. Many of these barrels are available because the Semi's blow-up if you mix Nickel and copper jacketed ammo without cleaning in between. I have scrapped 3 to that end. There is also a heavy machine gun bbl. out there that was for an obscure LMG in 6.5x55 and they are excellent for re-barreling Norwegian Krags but are of tough, hairy steel, prolly from Eskilstuna or wherever tough Swedish steel comes from. If I ever had a spare barrel for the Husqvarna-made BAR I would nevr sacrifice-it until I found the gun it was for. That thing is poetry in motion.
I saw a 21H bolt for sale at the Calgary Gun Show -- $350 I think was the asking price . I dont know who it was or how to find him again. I was surprised to see one - it had the butter knife handle etc. If I had known of your quest I would have got his name.
