Instead of finding a 1911 (in my previous threads) I have decided to build an AR15 instead! :D

Like the title states. I have been researching the website over the easter long weekend, and I have read the AR 15 CDN Dealer Offerings.

Can someone help me price out the best bang for your buck set up?

I am looking to buy it in pieces (upper/lower) and slowly build one up, that way I can learn how this rifle works.

I currently live in Calgary. I have seen that Wolverine and ArmsEast have the best prices. If anybody out west know of a local shop that will match the prices let me know.

I was at the gun show over the weekend and saw some very nice setups.

If you guys can help me out it would be awesome!!

The main questions I have is:

1) what lower and upper parts are rated the more durable brands?
2) what barrel length do most people recommend using?
3) is there another vendor you would recommend to order scopes and other accessories?

I would like to keep the build around the $1000 mark (give or take a couple hundread) without special accessories.

I have seen the Norinco's but would rather build one from better brands.

Thanks for the help guys!

I bought the lower receiver, parts kit and some small parts from Armseast, great products, great service. I bought the upper receiver, barrel, free floating rail on EE, and all tools(upper receiver block, multi-tool, etc..) from Brownells. It took me couple of months to gather all parts.

First question. What do you intend to do with your rifle?

im a freelance hitman..... i mean..

Actually, I've always loved the look of this gun as a kid, and now I would love to build something to add to my collection, and shoot at my range.

Ok, so what type of shooting. Are you going to spend your whole life at the bench, shooting offhand, prone, three gun, defensive training. Will you shoot it regularly and become proficient with it or is it simply a toy to play with on occassion?

Without a defined role it will be near impossible to create/build a rifle that you will enjoy and one that serves you well.

Really. How can people answer how to help you build something, and what is the best barrel length if you don't tell them your intentions and interest?

Without getting into specifics about the AR you want to build, you may want to consider the following:

I don't think you are going to build for $1000, let alone using quality parts.
A) You are going to need tools. The following isn't meant to be a comprehensive list, but a bare minimum: Some are specialized (barrel vice blocks, receiver vice block, barrel wrench), while some are not (vice, pin punches, brass hammer, assorted screwdrivers)
B) There are some things that are not worth buying in their separate parts, and you will likely get a better price if they are bought complete (eg. bolt assembly)
C) Certain parts are getting very expensive, and some are drying up due to US export rules. (flash supressors, barrels)

IMHO, unless you are after something very specific, I would purchase a complete rack grade AR from one of the vendors and use your nickels to purchase ammunition; especially if this is your first.
