sanding down my sks stock?

Just got a russian sks. I dont know a ton about it, it has 1951 stamped on the top of it but other than that i dont know how to desifer the different or better ones.
The stock and gas cover are in not bad shape but I was thinking about sanding them both down and refinishing( laquering) has anyone else done this and how did i work out?

do not "sand" the woods. Use a chemical stripper and 00000 steel wool. The sanding does harm and erases any military markings that may be present. Refinish as you will but I suggest Tru.Oil and again 00000 steel wool to apply the coats. After all is dry, use a good paste wax ( Min-Wax) and hand buff.
 
The original finish is shellac, which is what tru-oil is. When I did mine I just rubbed on two coats. This pretty much renews the original finish as shellac wears with age. I didn't even sand or steel wool, just rubbed it on and it came out fantastic IMO. cheers

excellent advice - do not use sandpaper. Go to a paint store and buy some paint remover - "Circa 1850" is one brand name i've had good results from. May take more than one application. keep away from sandpaper
 
chuck83, as others have said, go to the Red Rifles section, look for posts by a fellow member by the handle "louthepou", he's got the shellac thing down pat IIRC!
