Hey guys, I recently purchased my first rifle. A .17HMR with a BSA sweet 17 scope. It was mounted and bore sighted at the store. (P&D in ed.) I didn't realize in the store but now that i have it home it appears that the crosshairs are not square.(not level) Its not real bad, just enough to bother me i guess. Its hard to tell if the scope just needs to be turned slightly or if it is a poor scope and the crosshairs are just off. Does this happen? If it is that the scope just needs to be turned a bit, is this something(having never mounted a scope) I could just do myself. ie. loosen the screws, turn it, and tighten them again. or something i should have done by someone withe experience? Thanks for your advice!

Use a mini-level to true up your cross hairs. I used a laser level shining on my wall while my gun was in a vice to true mine up.

Don't do it when you are holding the gun though, chances are, your not holding it perfectly straight.

Crooked scopes are a pet peeve of mine..
Nice choice for a first rifle! Not quite as cheap as a .22 to shoot, but TONNS more fun.

Get the scope fixed, enjoy the rifle. Seeing how you said it is you first you may want to let the shop do it, there can be a bit of an art to tightening it back down correctly, especially on an inexpensive scope like the sweet 17.

If we mounted it we will make it right. We go to great effort to square the reticle to the gun and most times the customers will get a chance to look through it and verify it is correct. Some people lean into the scope and then want to turn the scope in the rings to compensate...this is not the right way to do it as your elevation and windage dials won't work right. If you can bring it back and we will check it and correct it if it's wrong. Remember we try to level the reticle to the gun...not the scope. Sometimes the reticles are not perfectly square in the body of the scope but most times it is off so little that you would not be able to tell. Phil.

Thanks Phil. I will maybe try and bring it in and at least have it double checked. If its right i guess i just need to get used to it. I should also mention for anyone who may have gotten the wrong idea. when i said P&D I was just simply stating where i bought it, not at all complaining about anything they did. In fact my experience there was great, and my dad and brother both have had good experience there as well. great store!

also just wondering if its possible that the crosshairs are not at a 90 degree angle to eachother? anyone ever had this problem?
