opening gunsmith shop

if you plan to take in work on restricteds and prohibs, or sell custom firearms built (not manufactured) under your liscence, you WILL need a firearms business liscence (dealer's liscence) approved by your province's CFO to go along with your regular business liscence and PST #

you will need a manufacturers liscence if you plan to complete (machine) any receivers for sale.

you can count on the cfo giving you a hard time about gunsmithing unless you have experience and a certificate that proves your gunsmith training

You won't need a business number if you operate it as a proprietorship, unless it is required to be in order to obtain the business firearms license. You will though, likely still need a vendors permit.

FYI, GST doesn't kick in unless you expect annual revenues to exceed $30,000

Of course, this doesn't mean very much with the new harmonization of the sales taxes

I took a entrepreneur course a few years ago, you need a gst ## and to list your buisness,
I think its a great idea, god knows if you keep your basic operating costs low you can make a living wage off of the lads on this site if your works good;)

Cheers and the best of luck!!

dunno about ontario but here in b.c. it's PST# and business liscence....... GST mandatory after 30,000 income in 3 consecutive quarters.... If i remember correctly.

you need a gst ## and to list your buisness,

List your business where? You don't need to be GST registered if your sales don't exceed a certain amount, it may, nevertheless be a good idea to register so that you may claim ITCs on the purchase of supplies, but, in the case of a gunsmith where the work is primarily labour intensive, it probably won't offset the cost of compliance.

Pardon me, maybe I was not clear enough...In glorious Onterrible, you do need a proper GST number so you can claim taxes on your earnings as a proper buisness....Damn mayhap I should go through my old school papers again...I have been making swords, knives and muskets on a small scale for a few years andclaiming my earnings...because god knows if I ever dare to cheat in even the smallest aspect I will be crushed;)
