Recognize these guns. Someone on another Forum mentioned that they were in Moscow and were surprised to see what rifles were being used for the Kremlin changing of the Guard ceremony.

It's an SKS-45...
The MN is too long and heavy to be balanced that way, and the M38 and M44 carbines too old fashioned for this kind of job.
The SKS looks mean, and means business...

I wonder... are they Tula or Izhevsk made? And what year?!

The dressed up SKS's do look good for drill. Easier to handle (in drill) than an AK for the taller guys. They need a lot more chrome on them though.....
 
Look carefully in the first pics the very person on the right is holding a 1949 Tula that are all after (just kidding).:D

It's a mandatory draft at 18 thing. 2 years for all fit males (unless they find a way to dodge it).

Russia holds two drafts/yr with the spring draft now underway. Most Russian NCMs look young also because there are few "career" soldiers outside of WOs and Officers.

One perceived weakness of the Russian army is the absence of a professional NCO class common in most Western armies. Those draftees selected for Sgt. rank are given specialist training at the beginning of their terms. Hence the bulk of senior NCOs rotate. out of the service after two years, taking their knowledge and leadership skills with them.

Actually its not 2 years anymore, about a year or so back they cut it down to 18 months and now its down to one year

I was talking to my grandfather (who is in Russia) and apparently the fall conscription drew so many recruits in some cities that they had to turn people away

if you think about it in terms of the economic recession its possible that young people cant find jobs so they join the army for a year and then work on contract basis and get paid for it after a year

edit: oh yea and back on topic, apparently the reason they use sks is because its more aesthetic and better looking than the ak, doesnt the us honor guard also use an older "inferior rifle" (m14)

It was 3 years in my time, and 4 in the navy I believe.
One year that is now is a waste of time and money. Only germany has a 9 months service which is even worse, you don't even have time to learn how to fire a gun properly.
