Frontier SVT 40 Mount?

From another thread in this forum :D Anyway, I have mounted and dismounted it, it is tight but I think a little lubricant will help it on its way. I used a wooden block and hammer to GENTLY tap it on and off. I haven't found a scope for it yet. Anyone got any ideas on that?

It certainly looks solidly made if a bit blocky and square...You indicate that it's a snug fit and needs to be tapped on.

Yes, it's snug, and then you tighten those bolts to really cinch it down. If you're shooting surplus ammo and need to clean the thing thoroughly it will be tough to dismount the scope and remove the bolt and bolt carrier. In fact, you can't remove the bolt and bolt carrier with the scope mount on, at least not without chopsticks and some serious gymnastics. Still, I like it and it is a "no drill, no tap" mount.

Edit: And you need to have an early SVT-40 with the scope mount grooves. If I am correct, all SVT-40 up until 1941 had them and the later ones mostly do not. What year was yours manufactured?

I have one, it is sturdy and very well made.
However, it does tend to slide forward under recoil. I guess that should be that the gun recoils backwards underneath the mount and scope, and the mount and scope do not recoil rearward as fast, so the thing creaps forward after a few rounds.
Eventually, the cocking handle strikes the mount and I get some FTEject.
At first, I didn't notice, and wondered why I was suddenly getting several FTE.
I cinched it all down as well as I could, but it still slips a bit. I am going to try Locktite or something perhaps.
As noted above, it will need to come off to pull the top cover and bolt out.

I have a 41 with the grooves.

Yes, having to remove the mount to clean the rifle is a weakness, but it's true of all of the mounts out there including the original sniper mounts. I guess you'll have to see if it repeats zero after being removed.

Wow, that's interesting. Even with those three pinch bolts and an originally tight fit it still moves?
I saw a video of a girl shooting an SVT and it didn't look like it kicks much? Haven't fired mine yet but it's coming soon.

Since my rifle is an original SVT sniper, perhaps I should think about drilling and tapping holes and installing a couple of set screws that go in and engage the slot?

Three large bolts, and a tiny set screw along the lower edge that is supposed to bind into the slot.

As in original sniper WITH notch? If so, I think there may be other options for you that use the picatinny rail.

What other options? The Frontier mount is the only one I'm aware of, other than the various original style repro mounts on ebay. I like how heavy it looks, seems beefy. I could wish the corners were radiused and the lines a bit smoother but what can you do?

Anything wrong with the ebay repro mounts?

I am pretty sure I have seen a repro-style mount using the notch system along with a picatinny rail instead of rings. I have tried to find it but nothing so far. How good are your Google skills?

Well, you have to notch your receiver to make them work and that would make you "Bubba".

and for strikeout, ouch!

B Square made SVT mounts. A member on here sent me some pics of his, he had to drill and tap his receiver to keep it still as well, he put various holes along the sides into his receiver. They are long out of production and hard to locate.

I have seen some mounts on ebay, kind of a pinky colour anodized mount with holes on top, on which you mount a normal Weaver base. Rarely seen.

It seems holding the mounts still is not easy on these rifles and you need an option where it's easily removable for cleaning the rifle.

I've also seen a couple of cases where someone grafted a Weaver base on to the bolt cover. Looks okayish but the bolt cover moves and has play.
