My buddy had Leupolds on his Rem 700 300RUM

They started to shear off...

Replaced them with Talley lightweights, and it's all good, so far.:)

About two years ago the range I watched some some guys Leupold rings shear off a brand new Tikka T3 Battue in 300 win mag. Took only about 20 or 30 rounds or so.

Nice rifle though. :)

Isn't that from taking the rings on and off the base?
Every Leupold mount problem I have seen has been a mounting issue.

I have run Dual Dovetails on much larger rifles than your buddy's 300 Ultra (338Ultra and 375 Ultra, and 450Ackley) and not had any problems?

The pin just above the "dovetail" is a potential weak point that if smacked hard enough can cause a shift in POI.
That said the same impact on a Talley could very well do the same (move the base instead).

Hey guys: forget Leupold & Talleys and try Conetrol. They are hell for strong and do have windage adjustment in the rings. They also do not need lapping. I once had a Weatherby .340 that sheared or destroyed Redfield and Leupold bases & rings before being permantly tamed by conetrols. Also on the heavy kickers (.460 Wtby, .510 Wells etc.) they are the only rings I have found to stop the scope slipping from recoil. Not cheap However

I'd go with the Tally's over the dual dovetail Leupolds.

Personally, I still prefer Weaver bases with Burris "Z" rings, myself.

He's not the type to swap scopes off and on. I think the scope was mounted by the gunsmith that built the rifle, and there it stayed until I sent it to Guntech to have the muzzle brake removed and Guntech noticed that the rings were shearing. Why, I dont' know.

If you are mounting a Leupold scope on a remington 700 the Talley's are hard to beat, but other types of scopes the height of the back of the base can be an issue, particularly on scopes with large eye pieces.

How many rounds are you talking about before this happened any idea? I have the Steel Grand Slam Weavers on my Rem 700 300 Ultra Mag and see no issue's yet!

The Leupie dovetail rings and bases sat on my Sendero 300 RUM with a Leupie 4.5-14 Leupie LR scope for close to 200 rounds. I then swapped the rings, bases and scope to my 7.5 lb 300 RUM and I saw slipping (shearing?) at the rear dovetail within 50 rounds. The replacement talleys have given me zero issues. Now adays it's the Talley Lwt's on all my hunting rifles (I use the lows and get proper cheek weld - no problems for me), and the heavy barrel range rifles and BIG boomers all have mil spec 1 pc bases and rings.

100% Talleys.
I bought a Nightforce a couple years back and the Nightforce manual said not to use Leupold rings/bases. Probably due to the inertia that a 34oz scope generates with heavy recoil. I had trouble keeping the Nighforce from sliding in Burris signature Z-rings(inserts) with 6.5-284 recoil. I also read somewhere that the leupold dovetail only has 60% surface conact with the base due to the dovetail clearance required for turning in.
