choice of caliber to Rebarreling a 30-06?

I have seen quite a few .308 Win built on long actions on the web so they could seat the big Heavy bullets out so they don't loose powder volume. Have no Idea about feeding though.

7x57 also works well in a long action,..so does the 6mm Rem
also 8x57 and 257 Roberts

and of course any of the "improved" versions of everything mentioned thus far...

and I wouldn't hesitate to chamber a 284 Winchester in a long action...or any wildcat on the 284 case.

yes off course.

is it possible to use 308 family since the bolt face is the same or it wont work properly since the action is too long?

I built my 7mm-08 on a long action 700 so I could use a Kwik- Klip for hunting... it works fine... the same for a 6mm Rem or a 257 Roberts or 7 x 57, .284 etc...

i am looking for a target rifle cartridge base on a 30-06 long action remington
Most would suggest that a short action would be better for a target gun.

Why not get the gun tuned up and try it as is with a good scope? I've seen some 30/06s that were very good shooters.

.

i was thinking of 260 rem or 264-284 if possible with this action
the 260 as the same bolt face but not the 284

Actually, frward, the 284 has the same rim diameter as the 308, 30-06, etc, so you are good to go with that one.

PS: Okay, I see Rembo has already pointed that out....and given you good advice on the 6.5-284, the same cartridge as you already mentioned, 264-284.

Great cartridge! River Rat on the board here, built one of those about twenty years ago. It was very accurate, and a great game cartridge as well.
