Hey guys!

So my brother has asked me to see if I could get him a .223. He is currently in the army so he is away, and I was hoping to pick him up something good. He is paying, but he trusts my choice..

Everywhere I look, it makes me feel kind of sick how much prices have gone up since last year.. makes me not want to buy anywhere. I got a Remington CDL in .270 last year for $680 shipped! I know that was a super deal, but the gun is now $1200! :/ crazy.

I was wondering who had the cheapest prices on a Remington SPS or Varmint and whether it would be good to go Remington, Savage, or Stevens.

Thanks. I will keep looking in the EE

You will not go wrong with a Stevens 200, a little over $300 now I believe. They shoot, need a little trigger work, even replacing the spring helps a lot, factor in the price and they are unbeatable value.

Check threads on various sites, you will get similar comments.

Sorry, I forgot to include that.

We are looking at a bolt-action with a budget of about $600 for the gun and $250 for the scope.

How good is Savage's lineup? I heard they are supposed to be pretty accurate and he loves the accutrigger on my rifle.

I would have said the Stevens 200 because then when he gets home there will certainly be a good rifle waiting for him for no more $ than necessary and then he doesn't have to keep it forever, it will sell easily when he has had some time to think about it if he decides he really wants something else.

But since you know he would like the Accutrigger, I think that justifies spending a bit more for a Savage. Mind you, the Stevens trigger is adjustable, being the old Savage trigger, it's just less accessible for the do-it-yourselfer than the Accutrigger.

Stevens are now in the $400 range. All prices have gone stupid. I'm done buying guns unless I desparately need something...and I don't see that happening for a while.
Even a Savage 12fv in .223 is like $779.

He is looking for a hunting rifle, but accuracy is a good thing.
He said it can be either wood or synthetic stock, although he prefers synthetic, and he wants a bolt-action.

I am still looking :/ Scouring the EE for one.. I just feel that the retail prices for the new ones are quite high!

Chuck had a nice one up but that was sold :/

A Savage 12FV would be nice if I could find one.

I am pretty sure he will be going with the Savage line or with the Remington SPS or SPS Varmint.

I called them looking for a 22-250 yesterday. Didn't have what I was looking for but did have 223 in Savage 12FV at LAST YEARS PRICE. They had 3 stainless barrels at $679 and 1 blued barrel at $589.

Another vote for the Stevens 200 .223

Go for a Stevens 200 in .223

:agree:If it's for hunting. I own one and it's really a good rifle for the price.

I use mine mostly for target shooting. I am starting to reload, so I may upgrade with a new rifle that has the accutrigger, accustock and a heavy barrel as my abilities grow.

The savage 12fv is a little too heavy to carry ...but if hunting stationary like in a blind...you cannot find better at the price. I have one in .223 and it shoots loonies at 200 yards. But I do not haul it hunting unless sitting in a gopher field. The Stevens is certainly the way to go as it is the closest to a Savage.

So, I am now debating between the Stevens 200, the Savage 12FV, Savage 12BVSS, and Savage 10FP I believe. Here is the thing. I just reminded him that you can't shoot a deer with a .223. He said 'Oh', and that he would think about it. He is coming home tonight actually so we will discuss this.

I can right now order a .308 10FP or a .308 12FV for a good price. However, if he bought a .308, it would be his deer and varmint rifle, and I don't know how well heavy guns like that with a 5-15x or a 6-18x (what he wants) scope on it would do in the woods.

I am really wanting him to go with the Savage 12BVSS in .223 or .22-250, so we will see how it goes. The store I want to buy it from has a 9-12 week wait for them :/

Well. Just to update, he went with a Savage 10FP in .308. We are both 19 so cash is kind of low at this point in our lives so he decided he wanted one rifle to do everything. He topped it with leupold bases, leupold rings, andddd a Bushnell Legend 5-15x. I tried to get him to spring for the 3200, but everything already came to nearly $1000 so the Legend will have to do it for now. Perhaps 2-3 years in the future he can put a nicer stock and a nicer scope on it. He is in the military so he isn't home too often anyways.

Anyways, thanks all for you help. Cheers.
