Well it could never be done again in a million years and likely never will be!!!!!

With 100% the truth shooting my 1874 BP loads no wad no grease cookey, SPG lube, at 100 m, My targets caught on fire.:rolleyes:

Talk about hot loads!

I have never seen this before and never will again, turned out to be quite teh fire but got it out. I was trying to zero in on one target and it dissapered,,, WTF.. and then they all caught fire lol!

I can not explain how, or why but at orono station eight burned down today lol!

That rifle sounds like it has some spirit!!

Real black powder with all its foibles and personality brings the shooting fun level up a notch.

Too bad you didnt get it on tape!! moments like that are priceless!

Here would be my guess little bit of lube on the back of the bullet or some black powder got stuck in the lube groves on loading smoldered till it hit the target and then caught it on fire one in a million . Time to buy a 649 ticket . Black powder always interesting.
 
what was the backstop material? The bullet passes through the target so fast that I doubt that it would set a bare sheet of paper on fire. Most puzzling even though bullets do get pretty hot travelling down the barrel, from friction. I once picked up a pistol bullet shot with a minimum charge of powder into a pile of newspaper. Barrel length was about 2 or 3 inches and the bullet bounced off of the paper. It was too hot to touch. At the same time they cannot get up to 450 F or the alloy mixes would melt

It goes through fast but I suppose it could leave the hot lube behind on the paper.
 
B.P. granules or pellets?
Saw a BP pellet a guy was using in cowboy loads start a bale fire a few year back. That was a BIG fire..... Two fire trucks & two water tankers had the sucker out in about an hr. Damn near burnt the whole farm down.
 
I've shot a lot of BP and never even heard of that one!! Got to be a million to one thing alright.

Now grass fires are a different matter... Theres a good reason that the range I go to has its own fire truck and water barrels all along the loading line.
 
Do you wipe the bases of your bullets off before you seat them?
If you don't there's a possibility of the wad sticking to the bullet because of lube, and that wad is directly in front of the powder charge.
