recoil force generated by the M14?

M14s kill scopes because they recoil sharply in both directions, not because they recoil hard. The reciprocating effect of the gas system is what's hard on scopes.

I would definitely not call it a kicker...any bolt gun of the same approximate weight in the same chambering will kick harder.

And when it comes to the collarbone, I find if you are flattened right out on the ground in prone position with the rifle resting on the mag, it's tough to stay off your collarbone. I have to raise my shoulders about four inches before I can get completely off my clavicle which is sometimes a disadvantage.

If you shoot either offhand or off a bench or seated or kneeling you will never notice it, but if you do a lot of prone shooting from awkward spots you will definitely hit the clavicle sooner or later IMO.

I do a lot of oddball shooting so I have pounded the hell out of mine once or twice. You can feel a couple of good dents in it now.

The barrel/gas cylinder volume affects recoil by reducing the pressure and velocity of exit gasses. The formula ignores this.
But at least it is gives you better information than the "There is no recoil/It took my arm off" nonsense.

The only real way to measure actual recoil is with the formula quoted earlier. Way too subjective otherwise.

I know guys who swear that a Jungle Carbine firing factory 303 british kicks like a mule; rediculous in my opinion, but they swear it. Considering how heavy the rifle is, and that it's a semi that absorbs a notable amount of felt recoil, the M14 may be the lightest shooting .308 around, but it's not a .223 either.

Percieved recoil is also very seriously affected by fit of the rifle, shooting position and skill/experience of the shooter. Most likely anyone weighing more than 100 pounds who feels their M14 kicks too much needs to make some modifications to their rifle to fit them properly, or they just need to learn how to shoot it.

Grizzlypeg made an excellent comment.
Just the momentum of the action/springs rather than the force on your shoulder.
Bolt guns don't have that spring buffer business...

My M14 kicks far harder than my AR15, or VZ58. Even my super light Remington 1100 shotgun with field loads would kick less than the M14 with standard Mil surplus rounds.

The M14 is a kicker, so anyone saying "negligible" isn't being helpful to people trying to get nervous small framed noobies out shooting. Besides, why else does the M14 destroy cheap glass on people so often?

You could do a simple experiment to find out the exact force using springs and a grade 12 physics book.

Well, IMO - If you are bringing out a TOTAL NOOB who may or may not be "nervous", you should be using a .22lr rifle anyway, not a center fire...

...that being said, it is true that an M14 does give a good kick compared to a CZ858 or AR so if one is worried about recoil stick to .223 or 7.62X39.

Is the recoil enough that we could attach little electric generators to captor the energy produced?

We could then wrap shooting sports in Suzukies green flag and everybody would love us  :D

Only if you are shooting baby seals from the open window of an idling, untuned H1 that has tiger and snow leopard seat covers, sitting on the foredeck of a Norway Flagged whaler that is, in addition to its catch of 2 sperm and 3 blue whales, towing a Japanese registered "long line" fishing trawler that is making extra money by smuggling/dumping toxic waste just NW of the Grand Banks area...

...Oh and you are using a stock for your M14 carved from elephant tusk while you smoke your pipe carved from Black Rhino horn.

And just to keep it "green" your pipe is filled with BC's best!

Everything is relative. After shooting sabot slugs out of an 870 with a rifled barrel, an M-14 feels like a 10/22.

IMHO, the M-14 is a pussycat; very pleasant to shoot.
