I have two 870 express shotty's that both had the same problem....upon shell ejection they stovepipe so the shell never gets fully ejected from the reciever. I have sent one back to Remington but is there a way I can just sand down the ejection port on the reciever allowing more room for ejection? Will this solve my problem and how should I go about it? Grit on sandpaper? Where to sand? etc. thanks

sounds like the ejector is getting weak, or its broken causing it to not fling the shells out. fairly easy fix, about an hour in a gunsmith shop and it would be fixed, mind you you would have a spot on the outside of the reciever from replacing the rivit holding the ejector in.

if you are using 3" shells, go down to 2 and 3/4". Not much room for error in ejection, and some reason, this solved the problem.

An 870 set up for 3" shells should not have any problem ejecting anything that length or shorter. If you are using a 3" barrel on an older 2-3/4" receiver (serial number does not begin with an "M"), you will likely have trouble ejecting 3" shells.

The fix to this is to change out the ejector for the newer 3" one, which sits farther back in the receiver.

If the gun is a 3" gun, there is something wrong with the ejector and/or possibly the extractor.

In no case is it necessary to open up the ejection port.

Remingtons all have that damned rounded ejection port. I've mentioned it in other threads on the same issue and don't mind doing it again. File the front of the ejection port square with a square file. It takes about one hour to do it right so it looks good. Clean up the fileings and reassemble the rifle. Problem solved, it won't happen again. I've had similar problems with semi auto Remington shotguns, 1100 and 11-87, this fix has cured them as well.

I always think I pull back the action with authority but it always seems to have this issue when I'm shooting doubles with clays? Probably just so anxious to get the second that I'm not fully bringing back the forearm?? I'll put another 100 rounds through it at the club tomorrow and see if it's still doin it.

Reading this post^,I'd bet dollars to donuts that your short stroking it. I have had numerous 870's and the only problem I run into is with my 3 1/2" gun. I short stroke it periodically, the 3"ers I never have a problem with.

The 3.5 has a longer stroke than the 3 inch right?
